Father Roland's voice was heartbreaking, mournful like a cuckoo crying blood. It caused Mastelo, standing by and watching, to shudder inwardly; he found it hard to believe his close friend could be consumed by such profound grief. "Thud!" Roland slammed his forehead hard against the floor. The crisp sound echoed through the chapel, snapping Mastelo out of his astonishment. Mastelo instinctively looked over, his transcendent vision catching a fine crack appearing on the stone floor. Mastelo's mouth twitched, and he hurriedly moved to stop Roland, but Roland began hammering his head against the ground again as if performing some kind of self-inflicted penance! Mastelo could no longer just stand by; he directly used the power of faith to haul Roland back to his feet. Yet Roland acted like a madman, fixing bloodshot eyes on Mastelo and roaring in a hoarse voice, "Don't stop me! I must redeem myself!"
