Fangsheng fell into deep thought upon hearing Ulysses's words. For a moment, he considered tentatively agreeing to buy some time, and then running away with Lewan. But then he remembered his promise to Corell. Furthermore, Corell was still yearning for the life they would have after escaping back to Yalan, fantasizing about a wonderful life with his mother and younger sister.
Fangsheng never considered himself a selfless, self-sacrificing good person. On the contrary, he always thought of himself as a coward, only occasionally driven by "circumstances" to do unexpected things.
Yet, if he were to do certain things, he feared he would never have a clear conscience again. While the saying "let others die rather than suffer myself" was all well and good, the present Fangsheng still could not ignore his own heart. Just as Lewan had self-deprecatingly put it, neither of them could get past that hurdle in their hearts.
