Ulysses walked out of the alley with an elegant stride, a pleasant smile on his lips. Passers-by looked curiously at the impeccably dressed gentleman, wondering why he had emerged from such a cramped and gloomy alleyway. But their curiosity was fleeting, and they quickly turned their attention elsewhere.
The little boy outside the bakery was much the same, his tiny eyes filled with utter bewilderment. He had clearly seen this gentleman buy a piece of bread and walk into the alley, yet now the gentleman had come out again, and the bread was gone.
Do people go into alleyways just to eat bread? The boy's curiosity surged, and a look of intense inquiry appeared in his eyes. He knew that alley well; his mother had always forbidden him to enter it because it smelled too awful. He refused to believe that this handsome older boy could possibly eat bread in there, especially since the older boy didn't even have any crumbs on his lips!
