Chapter 100

1,888 words9 minutes read

On a moonless night with a bitter wind blowing, the clapper outside the granary struck the third watch. Two dark figures crept along the base of the wall, their flint tightly gripped and growing hot in their palms. "Wu Laoliu, what are you shaking for!" the older man hissed, lowering his voice as a cold gleam flashed from the dagger in his sleeve. "Lord Ju said that if we burn this granary, your sister's life in the Fengnian County prison will be spared!" The younger man's Adam's apple bobbed as he looked up at the five-story-high cement granary wall. The sticky sweat in his palms soaked right through his flint. A lantern from the watchtower on the roof swept past, illuminating the newly scabbed whip marks on his neck—wounds from the medicine Instructor Zha had personally applied during training just three days ago.
