Hearing this, Hermione grew angry as well. She already disliked Ron. In private, she had heard Ron speak ill of Elwin behind his back several times. Because of this long-standing disdain, she spoke up to put Ron in his place. Hermione stood up straight and said, "What, did I say something wrong? Showing off for attention! I'm talking about you! How ridiculous, trying to compare yourself to Elwin! As if you're worthy!" Ron's face turned crimson. He was already feeling awkward, and with Hermione putting it that way, he felt even more unable to show his face. Young wizards spoke without measuring their words, and her cutting remarks went straight for his vital spots. The truth was the sharpest blade of all. He never expected a wrench in the plans named Elwin. Forget about Ron himself—Harry Potter was practically fading into the background.
