Chapter 8

Elwin rolled his eyes in secret.
Not the only choice, indeed.
After all, there wasn't a second bookstore in Diagon Alley.
No wonder the shops in Diagon Alley made so much money.
They were all running monopolies.
Unlike purchasing a wand, buying books, cauldrons, and other items later on at the bookstore went off without a hitch.
After paying and leaving, Elwin also acquired his very first pet.
An owl.
It was worth mentioning—though whether it was a Hogwarts tradition remained unclear—that every new student shopping list seemed to come with a free pet.
Elwin's owl was a gift from Dumbledore as well.
After ignoring Dumbledore's suggestion to name the owl Cockroach Cluster.
Elwin's household gained a new addition named Poppy.
For the last stop, Elwin and Dumbledore came to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions.
Although Elwin already possessed the Versatile Robe, he certainly couldn't tell Dumbledore about that gadget.
So the clothes he needed to buy still had to be bought.
Once the robes were purchased, it officially marked the end of Elwin's trip to Diagon Alley!
After Dumbledore escorted Elwin and Old Tom back to the old mansion.
Dumbledore said, "Well! Today's itinerary is finished! I must be off as well! Master Elwin, see you at Hogwarts!"
Elwin nodded. "Won't the Professor stay for dinner?"
Dumbledore shook his head. "No, thank you! I have other matters to attend to!"
Elwin nodded. "Then I won't keep the Professor any longer! Thank you for your hard work today, Professor. Much obliged!"
Dumbledore smiled. "It was nothing! Farewell!"
With that, Dumbledore vanished directly via Apparition.
Elwin watched the direction in which Dumbledore had departed.
A sharp gleam flashed across his eyes.
Was he off to deal with the Sorcerer's Stone?
The Sorcerer's Stone and things of that sort were rather far removed from him at present.
Besides, Elwin didn't actually harbor much interest in the Sorcerer's Stone.
It was merely a fake sort of immortality.
After having a meal, Elwin went straight back to his room.
As for Old Tom, he was dragged off by Rivers to inquire about the wizarding world.
Rivers wouldn't dare question Elwin directly.
And Elwin didn't mind.
Now that he knew this world was a magical one.
His focus would gradually shift toward the wizarding world moving forward.
Only, the timing wasn't quite right yet!
He needed to lay his plans slowly.
His subordinates were all ordinary people, though to most wizards, firearms were still deadly.
Even Dumbledore, if caught off guard, could potentially lose his life to a sniper rifle.
Wizards had terribly weak physiques.
Dependent on magic, they might even be inferior to ordinary people in that regard.
Therefore, it was not impossible for Elwin to make a move into the wizarding world.
Before that, however, he needed to establish some roots within the wizarding society.
Slytherin was undoubtedly a great choice.
Students who managed to enter Slytherin were basically those so-called pure-bloods.
That kind of power could not be casually discarded.
The only question was, would he be sorted into Slytherin?
He came from a genuine Muggle family, after all.
Yet the original books seemed to mention that the Sorting Hat would take a student's own wishes into consideration.
He would cross that bridge when he came to it; there was still some time before the term started.
Things beyond his own control were precisely what Elwin disliked pondering the most.
Elwin retrieved the Versatile Robe from his system reward inventory.
Its initial appearance was that of a simple robe.
Elwin slipped it on.
Standing before the mirror, he focused his thoughts.
The Versatile Robe instantly transformed into a black suit.
Elwin nodded in satisfaction.
Aside from providing a thirty percent immunity to Spells.
What satisfied Elwin the most about this garment was that it was dustproof.
In other words, the clothes would never get dirty.
For Elwin, who suffered from severe germophobia, this was nothing short of a godsend.
Elwin straightened his suit, then shifted his thoughts once more.
The clothes on his body directly transformed into pajamas.
Elwin sat at the edge of the bed, planning to flip through some of those Hogwarts textbooks.
Just at that moment.
Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck Elwin's mind.
Elwin hurriedly stood up.
He rushed over to the desk.
Opened the drawer, and took out a file folder from inside.
Then he pulled out a series of black-and-white photographs and laid them across the table.
These were precisely the case files from his parents' accident.
He had suddenly thought of a question.
Whenever he investigated the cause of his parents' deaths in the past, he had always approached it from the perspective of an ordinary person.
However, this was a magical world!
The cause of his parents' deaths had been bizarre in the extreme.
Not the slightest trace could be found at the scene.
Every detail reeked of the uncanny.
This had long since become an obsession buried deep within Elwin's heart.
He had transmigrated here as an infant, and in his past life, he was an orphan.
Ever since his birth in this lifetime, the care and affection his parents showered upon him could only be described as doting.
Consequently, Elwin held a deep, heartfelt attachment to both of them.
When he learned the news of their deaths.
Elwin had felt completely shattered; after experiencing a single year of familial warmth and love, his parents had passed away. Over the years, Elwin had constantly searched for any lingering clues regarding their deaths.
Yet, he had gained nothing whatsoever.
Now, however, knowing that this world was a magical one.
Those unreasonable and illogical aspects of his parents' deaths suddenly seemed to have an explanation.
With so many suspicious points and irrationalities, ordinary people certainly couldn't have pulled it off.
What if the perpetrator was a wizard?
If the perpetrator was a wizard, everything suddenly started to make sense.
Only wizards possessed that kind of power.
Only they could pull off something to that extent!
Yet, Elwin still couldn't wrap his head around one thing.
Why would wizards target parents who were ordinary people?
Daring to target ordinary people meant the culprit must undoubtedly be a dark wizard.
They wouldn't even fear pursuit by the Ministry of Magic!
However, calculating by the timeline, Voldemort should have fallen the year he was born.
Because he was the same age as Harry Potter.
That afternoon at the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley, he had overheard those wizards discussing how Harry Potter was starting school this year.
So it had nothing to do with Voldemort—was it some rogue dark wizard instead?
Then what was the culprit's objective in targeting his parents?
Was it instigated by a rival family?
If a rival family possessed that sort of capability, he wouldn't have been given the opportunity to bring the Cavendish family to where it was today; he would have been dead long ago.
The local families in London had either been wiped out by him or driven out of London by now.
None of them seemed to have that kind of connections, either.
Most importantly, Elwin had already thoroughly investigated all those families over the years.
Back then, times were turbulent, so there had rarely been major friction between the families.
Let alone something like assassinating another family's head.
Elwin gently massaged his temples with his fingers.
He felt a mild headache coming on.
It was as though he had found a clue, but that very clue had only made the mystery even more murky and tangled.
Shaking his head, Elwin couldn't be bothered to think about it anymore.
Thinking harder wouldn't bring clarity.
Once he entered the magical world and integrated into it, he would have many more ways to investigate the truth of back then.
By now, he could basically be certain that the person who made a move back then was, nine times out of ten, someone from the wizarding world! Following this thread of inquiry, Elwin was certain that one day, he would uncover the whole truth!
