Chapter 49

1,390 words7 minutes read

Lin Ge had been at the orphanage for two days. With the looming shadow of impending demolition hanging over everyone, the atmosphere had grown visibly heavy over the past two days. An orphanage is truly among the most vulnerable groups in society—drifting precariously in the wind and rain, completely lacking the ability to protect itself. Mother Hu was extremely anxious, sleeping only an hour or two each night, which resulted in her headaches growing increasingly severe. Lin Ge thought about what Xiao Li had said the other day, but he could not be certain whether the man was telling the truth, nor did he dare use it to comfort the others. What if Boss Qian's assistant had just been making empty talk, or lacked the clout to pull it off? Giving them hope now would only make the eventual disappointment that much greater. With no other choice, Lin Ge could only help Mother Hu with acupuncture and massage once a day to ease her headaches, while strongly urging her to stop going out to plead with officials. "Since you've already been trying for half a year with no results, going back these past two days will probably be a waste of effort anyway. Construction won't start until after the New Year in any case, so why not put aside all these worries for the next few days and just focus on spending a wonderful New Year with the children!"
