Before Tsui Hark began filming *Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon*, there were suggestions that he should remake his directorial debut, *Butterfly Murders*, given the box-office success he had recently achieved with *The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate*. However, Tsui was clear-headed; in the current climate, remaking a classic film is no guarantee of success.
Audiences hold many past classics to an incredibly high standard, and most actors who attempt remakes end up being savaged by critics. *The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate* was an exception, and Tsui was not so delusional as to think he could remake everything. Just look at the new *A Chinese Ghost Story*—didn't they cast Liu Yifei? The box office still flopped as expected.
Tsui decided instead to integrate certain elements of *Butterfly Murders* into this new project, intending to center this entire series on fantasy-mystery cases.
