Chapter 4

Chen Haotian stood at the doorway, watching the woman's figure gradually fade into the distance, his heart still surging with turbulent emotions. He had initially thought he had merely stumbled upon some bizarre abilities, only to gradually discover that he had stepped into a vast and complex world. Yet, all of this seemed to have just begun.
"The Heavenly Dao Society..." He repeated the name under his breath, as countless vague fragments surfaced in his mind—the mysterious organizations of cultivators, covert cultivation methods, and powers that transcended the mortal realm. He could not help but feel an inexplicable sense of attraction, accompanied by a nameless dread.
Walking back to the living room, Chen Haotian took a deep breath, his mind filled with the words the woman had just left behind. "Immortal cultivation is not a path one can simply choose at will." This sentence felt like an alarm bell ringing in his heart, reminding him of all the unknowns he was about to face.
It was not that he had failed to consider the dangers cultivation might bring; there were even moments when Chen Haotian doubted whether he was truly ready to embark on this path. But reality was cruel. He now possessed this spiritual qi, and if he failed to utilize it, it would merely accumulate within his body, ultimately consuming his very life force. He could either give up and return to an ordinary life, or embrace the unknown challenges and step onto the path of immortal cultivation.
"No matter how this path unfolds, I must walk it." A flash of resolve crossed Chen Haotian's eyes. He knew that his future would no longer belong to himself, but to this cultivation world brimming with spiritual qi and power.
That night, Chen Haotian tossed and turned, unable to sleep. The woman's words echoed endlessly in his mind, alongside thoughts of the true purpose of the Heavenly Dao Society. Was this organization meant to guide cultivators toward a higher realm, or did it harbor ulterior motives?
Early the next morning, Chen Haotian decided to head to the Heavenly Dao Society. He had made up his mind that, no matter what, he had to uncover the truth behind this organization and find out whether he could discover a suitable path of immortal cultivation within it.
He called his company to take a day off, then drove to a remote district in the downtown area. It was an ordinary-looking commercial building, unassuming on the outside, yet carrying an indescribable sense of mystery. Parking the car, Chen Haotian looked up at the building, suddenly feeling a strange premonition in his heart.
Walking into the building, the elevator doors opened automatically, and Chen Haotian pressed the button for the top floor. As the elevator ascended, he felt an inexplicable pressure closing in, as if the air on every single floor was growing increasingly heavy. The elevator stopped at the top floor, and the doors slowly slid open.
Standing at the elevator entrance, Chen Haotian saw a set of antique doors with the three characters for "Heavenly Dao Society" carved into them. The brushstrokes were vigorous and powerful, exuding an awe-inspiring aura. Two men dressed in black stood expressionlessly by the entrance, seemingly paying no attention to his arrival.
Chen Haotian took a deep breath and walked toward the doors. The moment he reached them, the doors opened automatically, revealing a spacious and magnificent hall inside. In the center of the hall stood a massive jade statue of an immortal in Daoist robes, with a solemn expression and an extraordinary bearing. The walls around the statue were hung with ancient scrolls and talismans, and the entire hall was permeated with a rich concentration of spiritual qi that naturally stirred a sense of reverence.
A middle-aged man in robes sat in the hall with a gentle smile—he was the companion of the woman from yesterday. Seeing Chen Haotian enter, the man slowly stood up, his gaze warm. "Welcome, Chen Haotian. You've finally come."
Chen Haotian came to a halt, secretly startled. The woman yesterday had not told him what kind of person he would be meeting, but the man before him was clearly no ordinary individual. His temperament was out of the ordinary, as if he had formed some sort of pact with the spiritual qi of heaven and earth, radiating an otherworldly aura.
"Are you... the leader of the Heavenly Dao Society?" Chen Haotian asked, a hint of caution in his tone.
The man smiled and shook his head. "I am merely one of the Guides here. The true leader... is a legendary figure who no longer handles daily affairs in person."
A slight stir passed through Chen Haotian's heart. It seemed the Heavenly Dao Society was not as simple as it appeared on the surface. Since even the leader no longer managed things personally, countless secrets and powers must be hidden behind the scenes.
"Since you are here, it means you have made your decision and are ready to join us?" The man's tone was calm, yet carried a trace of urgency.
"What do you mean by joining you?" Chen Haotian asked, remaining alert.
Instead of answering directly, the man smiled faintly and turned to gesture toward a long table nearby. "Come, sit down, and let's talk."
Chen Haotian hesitated for a moment before finally walking over to the table and sitting down. The man handed him a cup of tea and said softly, "You don't need to rush to answer that question. You have experienced the awakening of spiritual qi, and the flow of this qi is not something ordinary people can comprehend. It represents a pact between you and heaven and earth, and once formed, this pact cannot be reversed. Our Heavenly Dao Society exists precisely to help you, and all those who possess spiritual qi, find their own path of immortal cultivation."
"Immortal cultivation..." Chen Haotian frowned slightly. "I don't completely understand the meaning of it. Does it mean the pursuit of eternal life?"
The man fell silent for a moment before slowly speaking, "Immortal cultivation is not merely the pursuit of eternal life; it is, more importantly, a form of transcendence. Transcending ordinary people, transcending the physical body, and transcending the shackles of the spirit. Cultivators do not strive to live longer than ordinary people, but to live more meaningfully—to be able to see a world that ordinary people cannot see, and to touch a power that ordinary people cannot reach."
Listening to the man's words, countless doubts arose in Chen Haotian's heart. "If that's the case, why don't you directly help all cultivators instead of guiding them through an organization like this?"
The man smiled and shook his head. "This is precisely what you need to understand. The path of cultivation is not one that everyone can walk successfully. Everyone's spiritual qi flows differently, their growth rates vary, and their ultimate destinations differ. The Heavenly Dao Society exists to guide you along this path and help you find the most suitable route."
Chen Haotian listened quietly, his heart filled with doubt, yet he also began to gradually grasp some of the purposes of the Heavenly Dao Society. He felt that he had been inescapably drawn into this world of cultivation, and the organization before him seemed to be an inevitable choice.
"I know you have many doubts in your heart, but you have already chosen this path. No matter what, we will walk it with you," the man said, his voice gentle yet carrying a sense of firmness. "However, you must also understand that the path of cultivation is not smooth and unobstructed. You will encounter countless challenges, and perhaps even fatal threats. Yet it is only amidst challenges and threats that you can truly grow and break through your own limits."
Chen Haotian raised his head, looking at the man, a flash of determination in his eyes. "I am ready. No matter what, I will see this through."
The man smiled faintly. "Very well. Since you have made your decision, let us begin guiding your path."
