"I am your true Inner Demon."
The words struck Chen Haotian's mind like a bolt of lightning. The figure before him was none other than himself—the self from the deepest recesses of his heart that he had never dared to face.
"You..." Chen Haotian's heart jolted violently. He stared in disbelief at his own reflection. The entity's aura, temperament, and overwhelming, intangible pressure seemed to rise from the very bottom of his soul, radiating intense hostility.
"Why?" Chen Haotian's voice was low and resolute. "You are not me. I am who I am! How could you possibly be me?"
The man smiled faintly, a mocking curve touching the corner of his lips. "Ha, how ridiculous. Did you think you could escape the agony within? Did you think you could sever ties with your past self and be reborn anew?"
Chen Haotian took a deep breath. Although the entity's aura was so oppressive it was almost suffocating, he did not step back an inch. "You are my internal fear, the obsession I once could not let go of. You might control me for a moment, but you will never control me forever!"
The "Inner Demon" before him shook his head indifferently. "You are far too confident. Did you think a simple state-of-mind trial would rid you of my bonds? Your heart is fragile, riddled with an unfaceable past, attachments you cannot let go of, and aspirations that can never be fulfilled. I am your true enemy."
"You're wrong!" Chen Haotian's gaze hardened. "The further I walk, the more clearly I see myself. You are no longer the driving force behind my progress; you are merely a shackle upon my soul. I will break this shackle, and only then can I truly transcend you—and transcend my past self!"
Before the echo of his voice had even faded, the "Inner Demon" lunged at him with lightning speed, throwing a palm strike so fast Chen Haotian barely had time to react. The air roared under the crushing pressure of the blow. Chen Haotian clenched his teeth and instantly circulated the spiritual qi within his body.
"Freeze!" Chen Haotian shouted, crossing his hands to release an icy blue frost that met and froze the incoming attack. The freezing power instantly dulled much of the strike's momentum, but the smile on the "Inner Demon's" face only widened, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.
"Not bad. True to your nature as a cultivator who has awakened spiritual qi, but did you really think this petty ability would defeat me?" The Inner Demon's voice dripped with disdain. With a flick of his finger, the frost shattered instantly, and the turbulent airwaves exploded, charging at Chen Haotian once more with immense energy.
"Void Palm!" Chen Haotian roared, rapidly forming hand seals as a violent current surged from his palms, beating back the oncoming attack. Yet, right behind it came that same crushing pressure—as if, no matter how hard he tried, he could never completely defeat the Inner Demon before him.
"You are simply someone who dares not face his own past!" The Inner Demon's figure began to blur, dissolving into the surrounding void as his voice echoed from all directions. "You dare not let go of your mother's death; you dare not face your father's cold cruelty; you dare not accept your own endless self-blame and resentment. You have always lived within the framework set by others, living as the person others see. You have never truly walked your own path—you have always lived beneath the expectations of others!"
"Everything you're saying... is wrong!" Chen Haotian's inner resolve remained unshaken. "Though my mother's death caused me agony, I cannot change the past. I will strive to live on and do everything I can for her sake. My father's coldness does not mean I agree with him, but I no longer seek his approval. I have my own path to walk, not the one anyone else wishes upon me!"
"Ha, ha!" The Inner Demon suddenly burst into a fit of wild laughter. "You still don't understand! The true Inner Demon is none other than yourself! You always tell yourself to let go of the past and face the future, but what you are truly fleeing from is that very past version of yourself. You dare not confront your own inner fears, your desires, your greed, your fragility!"
"Enough!" Chen Haotian shouted fiercely. The spiritual qi within him erupted, completely suppressing the murky voices. His state of mind finally reached a critical threshold, and looking through the void, he seemed to glimpse a clear, bright sky.
"I admit it—I am imperfect, and there are many pains and fears I cannot bear to face. But that is precisely the meaning of my existence. A true powerhouse is never someone who has never failed or never suffered; it is someone who can persevere through suffering, rise from failure, acknowledge their own weaknesses, and confront all their darkness head-on." Chen Haotian's voice grew exceptionally firm, as if a never-before-felt strength was continuously welling up in his heart.
As his words fell, the "Inner Demon" before him finally began to collapse. The phantom-like figure gradually disintegrated, dissolving into countless fragments that vanished into the void. Chen Haotian's mind and body seemed to be sublimated by this struggle. His spiritual qi was no longer merely a symbol of power; it had become the manifestation of his unyielding conviction.
Chen Haotian looked down at his slightly trembling hands. There was no trace of fear in his heart; instead, it was filled with an unprecedented calm. He knew he had passed the mental trial and truly defeated the Inner Demon hidden in the depths of his soul.
From within the void, the Guide's voice rang out once more: "Congratulations, Chen Haotian. You have passed the mental trial. You have taken the most important step upon the path of cultivation. What lies ahead is your true training."
Chen Haotian lowered his head slightly, feeling the flow of spiritual qi within his body. He knew his path of cultivation had only just begun. The difficulties and challenges ahead would no longer be obstacles halting his progress, but rather the catalysts for his growth. His gaze grew even firmer, carrying a strength that needed no words.
"I am ready to face all the challenges of the future," he whispered to himself, stepping forward with resolute strides.
