Chapter 9

1,435 words7 minutes read

After another ten seconds or so, it seemed Lin Yi had stopped sending gifts.
Xiongxiong Erjie, still connected, didn't wait for Xiaobei to speak. She took the stage in the live room, acting as if she were the host, and said with a coy, shy expression:
"0 God, I lost the PK, so I’m going to DM you my WeChat and phone number. I’m a woman of my word—I’ll take you out to eat."
As she spoke, she flashed her phone at the screen, looking expectant.
Although the gifts from 0 God hadn't been sent directly to her, she was seething with jealousy inside; yet, she maintained a polite smile on her face. As long as she could get 0 God to meet her for a meal in person, she would pull out all the stops to tie herself to him. If he could casually drop 50 million in gifts online, just imagine how it would be to meet him offline.
Seeing Xiongxiong Erjie’s presumptuous behavior, Xiaobei looked indignant. She even considered cutting the connection immediately, but after a moment of hesitation, she didn't.
However, when she glanced at the chat, she couldn't help but beam—a smile that melted the hearts of many otaku in the live room.
Commoner 001: "I have no interest in 'plastic faces.' Go cool off somewhere else. Xiaobei, cut the connection."
Xiaobei had already found Xiongxiong Erjie an eyesore. Seeing Lin Yi say this, she didn't hesitate for a second and immediately terminated the connection.
Xiongxiong Erjie was left there like a Jester, standing alone in her own live room, utterly embarrassed.
Xiaobei's Daily Life: "Little brother, I’ve sent you a DM. Let’s add each other on WeChat, and I’ll treat you to a meal."
Commoner 001: "That works."
Xiaobei's Daily Life: "I'll chat with you after I go offline, little brother. Why don't you watch me play a few rounds of games first?"
Lin Yi opened WeChat and quickly added her as a friend. Her WeChat name was Bei Xiaobei, and her profile picture was a photo of herself—she looked even prettier in the photo than she did on the stream.
Lin Yi casually tapped on her Moments, and he was instantly stunned. Most of the posts Xiaobei had shared were related to Zijin University.
Could it really be such a coincidence? They were at the same school. After thinking for a moment, Lin Yi finally remembered who she was.
He had once seen a post on his school's online forum ranking the ten most beautiful girls at Zijin University. Xiaobei was actually Bei Xiaobei, who was ranked third.
Although she was one of the top ten beauties, she wasn't particularly famous, probably because she worked as a gaming streamer. Lin Yi only had a vague impression of her.
Lin Yi wasn't meeting Bei Xiaobei in person yet, so he couldn't see her favorability rating toward him, but he figured it couldn't be low after he’d dumped 50 million on her. After all, according to the audience in the stream earlier, Xiaobei never added the "big bosses" from the leaderboards.
This time, Xiaobei had broken her own rule and invited Lin Yi herself. If you can’t move a cold, distant goddess, it’s only because your bid isn't high enough. In this world, aside from the inability to pause time, there is nothing money can’t handle. If it still doesn't work, then you just need to add more money.
Lin Yi checked the time; it was past nine in the evening. While the electricity wouldn't be cut off at ten, the dormitory lights would automatically turn off.
With nothing better to do, Lin Yi continued scrolling through his phone, recalling distant memories to ensure he didn't mix up the timeline.
He hadn't been scrolling for long before a few notifications popped up on his phone:
*“Doulang witnesses a mysterious tycoon—he actually fired off consecutive dragons at a female streamer!”*
*“Is it a distortion of human nature or a moral decline? 50 million treated like child's play—please, come for me next!”*
*“Two small streamers in a PK putting big streamers to shame; a mysterious tycoon appears in the Doulang live room.”*
*“Under the blessing of the giant dragon, the female streamer cries out that she can't handle it; the live room is filled with endless screams.”*
Several apps had sent him these sensationalist headlines one after another; it was clear they were all written by editors well-versed in the art of “shock value.”
Lin Yi couldn't help but click on a few. The content was much the same, all reporting on his feat from earlier. In such a short time, it had already reached the top of the trending lists on all major platforms.
After reading a few, his vanity was satisfied, and he began to feel bored.
Right then, as it neared 10:00 PM, the other residents of the dormitory returned one after another.
Seeing that Lin Yi didn't seem particularly heartbroken, Wang Qingyang felt much relieved, though he suddenly became indignant.
“That woman Qin Yuyao is absolutely shameless! She’s actually saying on the forum that Lin Yi was pestering her relentlessly, that she just gave him a chance and realized they weren't a good fit—claiming she was never our third brother’s girlfriend in the first place!”
Zhou Yitong walked over to Lin Yi and threw his arms around his shoulders. “Hey! Third Brother, how many times have I told you? That woman Qin Yuyao… even I can’t handle her. I told you to stay away from her long ago. Believe me now?”
“In the future, you need to learn from me. And you too, Jūn'ér. Whenever something comes up, ask me for advice. These are my exclusive, secret techniques that I don't share with outsiders.”
Brother Jun in the dorm had it even worse than Lin Yi. He hadn't even held a girl’s hand, whereas Lin Yi had at least managed a few touches, even if he’d risked his life for them.
Lin Yi actually hadn't taken the events of the afternoon to heart anymore, but his roommates were still very concerned.
Lin Yi said dismissively, “Qingyang, Yitong, Jūn'ér, it’s not a big deal. That woman has nothing to do with me anymore. Let’s not talk about it again.”
Hearing this, Zhou Yitong sat at his desk and shouted, “In that case, Third Brother, you’ve been ordering food every day lately, living the high life. Today is the time to show off our dormitory’s four-man squad again. Let’s crush them completely!”
“Hurry up and log in! Log in!”
Brother Jun, who was usually quiet, chimed in at an inopportune moment: “The dormitory four-man squad has never won a game. Yitong, stop playing Gragas; your barrels are always the enemy’s ‘white moonlight.’”
“Jūn'ér, your Vayne isn’t any better than mine. Every time I support you, you keep stealing my CS.”
The guys bickered as their hands flew, quickly logging into the game. Even though Brother Jun lived a relatively simple life, he wasn't a bookworm; he participated in dorm activities and never felt stage fright when gaming or singing karaoke. He just didn't have much of a social circle outside the dorm.
Just as Lin Yi logged into his account, he suddenly thought of something. “Wait for me, I’m going to call someone else so we have a full team of five.”
Zhou Yitong said, “Hurry up! My blade has been hungry for a long time.”
Lin Yi picked up his phone and messaged Bei Xiaobei, whom he’d just added: “One spot open for a team of five in ranked. Want to join?”
Xiaobei, having just ended her stream, was about to message Lin Yi when she saw his invite. “Wait a second, I’m logging in. Little brother, I’ll add you first.”
“Okay. The others playing are my roommates. Don’t mention my stream stuff; just act like we’re ordinary friends,” Lin Yi added, not forgetting to remind her.
It wasn't that he was afraid his roommates would find out he was a "tycoon." He just didn't want them to find out he’d tipped a streamer 50 million and then demand that he treat them to dinner. What was he going to use? The three hundred yuan he had left? He’d probably have to stay behind and work off the bill.
As soon as Lin Yi pulled Bei Xiaobei into the lobby, Zhou Yitong slammed his hands on the desk.
“Holy cow, Goddess Xiaobei! How did she get in here? Third Brother, don't invite anyone else! Sorry about that, but let’s start the game fast, don't let the goddess get away!”
