The lake rippled with a grey-green hue in the morning light. In its center stood a white pagoda, its reflection shattered into silver shards by a passing cruise boat, shimmering with scattered sunlight. Both sides of the stone arch bridge were crowded with children holding treats. The iron cage of a popcorn machine whirred, releasing the scent of caramelized sugar, making many a runny-nosed child drool. In the park stood an octagonal pavilion, and the old pagoda tree in front of it shed its leaves in a gentle, rustling shower. Inside the pavilion, several elderly men were sipping tea and playing chess. "Eat it!" "Advance the pawn!" "Oh, that move won't do."
