I took a taxi to the train station. Having been reborn from more than a decade in the future, every time I look at a train station in 2009, I am struck by a sense of historical displacement. In 2009, high-speed rail was still in the development phase, being laid out on a massive scale; much of it had yet to enter service. Strictly speaking, the only true high-speed rail line was the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway, while other completed routes were merely 250–300 km/h passenger-dedicated lines.
