Throughout the meal, the silence was chilling. A New Year’s Eve dinner in a normal household is a lively affair, but here in the Fu family, it felt as though they were eating simply for the sake of survival.
After the meal, tradition dictated that the elders distribute red envelopes. This part of the evening was, at least, a little more animated. Following their parents' instructions, some of the younger Fu children showered Elder Fu with sweet talk and coaxing. The old man, fond of the cute little ones, was generous with his gifts.
"Wishing you great prosperity!"
"May this red envelope bring you good fortune!"
