Sure enough, Baobao listened to Fusheng and immediately pressed his face against the eggshell, peering out at him. The two of them stared at each other, eyes wide. Inside the shell, Baobao had only seen his fuer, but not his muer. He opened his eyes wide and looked around: where was his muer? "Come on, Baobao, come out," Fusheng said in a gentle tone, as if afraid that a loud voice might startle the baby. He placed his hands together beside the insect egg, signaling for Baobao to crawl out. Baobao was so tiny that Fusheng didn’t dare speak loudly for fear of scaring him into tears. But Baobao didn't come out; he only reached out a tiny, soft, white hand to rest on Fusheng’s large palm, then tucked his other hand into his mouth to gnaw on it. Fusheng touched the baby’s small hand, feeling a mix of amusement and helplessness. He wasn't a baby anymore; he certainly wouldn't suck on his fingers like that. If someone offered him one, he wouldn't bite it, either—he’d be afraid of hurting the baby’s hand.
