I took a deep breath and slowly said, "I need time to fully understand the power of the Heart Sword."
"The Heart Sword?" Qu Chen furrowed his brow slightly, "What is so special about this sword?"
I shook my head, unable to put it into words: "I can only feel that it holds immense power, capable of even contending against Demonic Qi, but I have no idea how to use it or unleash its full potential."
"Rest assured, we will all help you." Qu Chen squeezed my hand, conveying a steady strength.
Over the next few days, a heavy, pre-storm atmosphere hung over the valley. Linger and Xuanfeng led the disciples in reinforcing the formation and stockpiling supplies, making final preparations for the impending decisive battle. Meanwhile, Qu Chen and I immersed ourselves entirely in my research into the Heart Sword.
"Look at these patterns on the blade..." I pointed to the intricate carvings near the hilt. "I feel like they are trying to tell me something, but I just can't grasp it."
Qu Chen stared intently. The patterns on the blade seemed to come alive in his eyes, shimmering with a strange light. He reached out and gently stroked the engravings, and a powerful surge of energy flowed from the blade, forcing him to close his eyes.
"I think... I saw something..." Qu Chen muttered, his brow deeply knitted.
I held my breath, not daring to disturb him. After a long while, Qu Chen finally opened his eyes, a glint shining within them. "I caught glimpses of some visions—visions about the origin of this sword..."
"Really?" I grabbed his hand excitedly, "Quick, tell me, what is its true origin?"
Qu Chen shook his head, his expression grave. "The visions were very blurry, but one thing is certain: this sword is no ordinary object. It possesses the power to purify all evil in this world, and you..."
He paused, gazing at me with burning intensity. "You are the master it has chosen. Only you can truly unleash its power."
A shock rippled through my heart, and an unprecedented sense of responsibility welled up inside me. I gripped the Heart Sword tighter, feeling the steady warmth radiating from it as if responding to my determination.
Late at night, the valley was utterly silent, save for the occasional chirping of insects that broke the nocturnal peace. Qu Chen and I sat side by side on the edge of the cliff, gazing at the dotted stars in the night sky.
"Lier..." Qu Chen spoke suddenly, his voice low.
I turned to look at him. Moonlight fell upon his profile, outlining his sharp, defined features.
"What is it?"
"I..." Qu Chen stopped short, as if hesitating over something...
"I..." Qu Chen trailed off again, starlight flickering in his dark eyes as if concealing many unspoken worries. I took his hand, giving him an encouraging look.
"Lier, I'm afraid..." He finally spoke, a trace of an imperceptible tremor in his voice. "I'm afraid that after this decisive battle, everything will change..."
I understood his worry. No one could predict the outcome of this battle. We might win, we might lose, or worse... we could lose each other.
"No, we won't," I interrupted him, my tone firm. "We will both be fine. We will overcome everything together and return to where we belong."
He gripped my hand back, the warmth of his palm transmitting strength to me. "Lier, after meeting you, I finally realized that there truly is someone in this world for whom I would cast aside all caution and risk everything."
His gaze was tender and affectionate. My heart felt touched by something, warm yet tinged with a slight ache. How I longed to tell him that I felt the same way—that after meeting him, I finally understood that crossing time and space to come to this unfamiliar Cultivation World was no accident, but the arrangement of destiny itself, all so I could meet him and fall in love with him.
"Chen..." I softly murmured his name, a thousand words ultimately condensing into a single sentence: "I believe in you."
We smiled at each other, our eyes reflecting the other's figure as if everything else in the world had vanished, leaving only the two of us.
Early the next morning, Qingyunzi summoned me alone to his room.
"Child, your swordsmanship has reached a commendable level, but wanting to master the Heart Sword relies on more than just brute force," he stroked his long beard, wisdom flashing in his eyes. "I have an ancient cultivation technique here called the 'Heart Sword Formula', which may be able to lend you a hand."
Joy surged in my heart, and I immediately dropped to my knees and kowtowed in gratitude. "Thank you, Master!"
In the days that followed, I cultivated the "Heart Sword Formula" day and night. This profound technique not only required massive amounts of Spiritual Power to sustain, but also demanded that the practitioner possess a pure and flawless sword heart. Countless times during the practice, I felt overwhelmed and wanted to give up, but whenever I thought of Qu Chen's encouraging gaze and the responsibilities resting on my shoulders, I gritted my teeth and persevered.
Hard work pays off, and my efforts finally yielded results. The connection between the Heart Sword and me grew steadily closer; I could clearly feel its every vibration and every breath. I even sensed that the Spiritual Power within my own body had become purer and more formidable because of the Heart Sword's existence.
The final layer of the "Heart Sword Formula" was to merge one's mental strength with the Heart Sword, thereby unleashing power that surpassed all limits. I sat cross-legged, closed my eyes, concentrated my mind, and focused all my awareness on the Heart Sword in my hands.
Suddenly, a mighty surge of power erupted from the Heart Sword, and I felt as though my consciousness was being sucked into an endless abyss...
"This is..." I struggled in the chaos, faintly catching glimpses of some visions—some secrets concerning the Demonic Cultivators... "This is..." I struggled in the chaos, faintly catching glimpses of some visions—some secrets concerning the Demonic Cultivators... Those visions were shattered and chaotic. I tried hard to see clearly, but it was as if a layer of thick fog stood between us. Suddenly, a massive black sword pierced through the mist, carrying an aura that could destroy heaven and earth, charging straight at me. Instinctively, I raised the Heart Sword to parry. The two swords collided, bursting with blinding light.
When the light faded, I found myself in a desolate wasteland surrounded by broken ruins, the air reeking of a sickening stench of blood.
"Where is this place?" I looked around, my heart filled with confusion.
At that moment, the Heart Sword suddenly vibrated violently, the blade emitting a dazzling red light as an aged voice echoed in my mind: "Child, you have finally come..."
"Who are you?" I asked warily.
"I am the sword spirit of this blade; you may call me Sword Soul," the voice paused before continuing, "This sword is no ordinary artifact. It is an Ancient Divine Artifact—the Heart Sword, possessing the power to seal all evil in the world. And you are the master it has chosen."
I was too shocked to speak. The sword in my hands actually possessed such terrifying power!
The Sword Soul seemed to see right through my thoughts and continued, "Demonic Cultivators practice evil arts, subsisting on the devoured vitality of living beings. Their greatest weakness is their fear of pure Spiritual Power. And the Heart Sword is their ultimate nemesis!"
A sudden realization dawned on me. So this was the key to defeating the Demonic Cultivators!
Waking from my cultivation, I was ecstatic, eager to share this news with Qu Chen.
When I found him, he was at the martial arts training ground instructing the others in simulated combat. Linger and Xuanfeng showed tacit coordination, their sword techniques fierce and sharp, yet facing Qu Chen's fluid attacks, they still appeared somewhat strained.
"Everyone performed exceptionally well today," Qu Chen put away his sword, a gratified smile on his face. "It seems the training during this period has been quite effective."
"A-Chen, I..." I started to speak, but he interrupted me.
"Lier, you've come at just the right time," he took my hand, his tone gentle. "Come, help me see if there is anything about this sword technique that needs improvement."
Suppressing my inner excitement, I carefully observed his movements while the Sword Soul's words echoed relentlessly in my mind.
"Chen, I have something very important to tell you..."
"Shh—" He placed a forefinger gently against my lips, signaling me to stay quiet. "Let's wait until tonight, and I'll come find you, alright?"
A light I could not quite fathom flashed in his eyes, and a faint sense of foreboding told me that something was quietly unfolding...
As night fell, I anxiously waited for Qu Chen's arrival, but unexpectedly, Linger showed up instead.
"Lier, what's wrong? You've been acting a bit strange today," she asked with concern. "Did you run into a bottleneck with your cultivation?"
"Linger, I'm fine," I forced a smile, changing the subject. "What brings you over at this hour?"
"I came to bring you some pastries," Linger said, pulling a delicate parcel of snacks from her tunic. "I just learned how to make these. Have a taste."
"Thanks," I accepted the pastries, though my unease only grew. Linger never came to find me this late unless...
"Oh, right, Lier," Linger suddenly lowered her voice, speaking mysteriously. "I saw Senior Sister Liu sneaking into Elder Qu's room today. Who knows what they were up to..."
My heart plummeted, and a bad premonition rushed over me. Linger's words exploded in my ears like a thunderclap. Senior Sister Liu colluding with Elder Qu? Could it be...
Struggling to suppress the turbulent waves in my heart, I feigned calmness and asked, "Linger, are you sure? This is no trivial matter."
"I saw it with my own eyes, how could it be false?" Linger said indignantly. "I was hiding in the bushes and heard Senior Sister Liu say that she had already scouted out our plans, and she even offered to help Elder Qu..."
Before Linger could finish, a flash of insight struck my mind. The plan! So that was it!
I had never understood why Qu Chen suddenly changed his strategy to take the initiative against the Demonic Cultivators. Thinking about it now, someone must have leaked the information! And this internal traitor was most likely Elder Qu!
"Linger, thank you for telling me this," I squeezed her hand, a flicker of resolve flashing in my eyes. "I will handle this matter."
That night, I found Qu Chen and shared Linger's discovery and my deductions with him. Upon hearing it, his face turned ashen, and he remained silent.
I knew this was undoubtedly a heavy blow to him. Elder Qu was the senior he respected the most, yet he never expected that Elder Qu would betray the sect and collude with Demonic Cultivators!
"Chen, when it's time to break, we must break. We cannot let Senior Sister Liu continue to wreak havoc among mortals," I held his hand, speaking firmly. "Besides, she ought to pay the price for the arrow she shot at you back then."
Qu Chen raised his head, his gaze filled with pain and struggle, but in the end, he nodded.
The next day, under the guise of cultivation, I lured Senior Sister Liu to the Back Mountain Forbidden Area. This place was rarely visited and lacked Spiritual Energy, making it the ideal spot to deal with her.
"Junior Sister Qu, what brings you looking for me?" Senior Sister Liu wore a red outfit, a hypocritical smile plastered across her face.
"Can't I just look for you to catch up if there's nothing specific?" I said with feigned casualness, though a trace of coldness flashed in my eyes.
"Of course you can," Senior Sister Liu covered her mouth with a chuckle, though a trace of imperceptible vigilance crossed her eyes. "Only, this Back Mountain Forbidden Area isn't a very nice place. We should head back earlier."
"No rush, I still wanted to ask you something," I pressed forward step by step, my tone icy. "Back then, why did you shoot and wound Qu Chen?"
Senior Sister Liu's expression shifted, a hint of panic flashing in her eyes, but she quickly recovered her composure and sneered, "Junior Sister Qu must be joking. How could I ever do such a thing?"
"Is that so?" I let out a cold laugh as a dagger gleaming with a cold edge suddenly appeared in my hand. "Then what is this?"
I walked toward her slowly, the dagger reflecting a chilling light under the sunlight...
