Chapter 14: So Bizarre, Let Me Take Another Look
Evrore was slumped over the desk in the living room, illuminated by the desk lamp beside her, flipping through a massive pile of letters. She looked utterly listless, her emerald eyes spinning in dizzying circles. (@﹏@) Her long white hair was draped casually behind her head, slightly messy and giving off a somewhat fluffy feel. Her rounded calves dangled beneath the high-backed chair, and her little rabbit slippers had somehow kicked off without her noticing, revealing her smooth, bare feet. They looked so small, dainty, and soft.
Suddenly, the single strand of hair on her forehead perked up. With a dazed expression, she leaped out of her chair and hurried over to the front door.
"Sister, I'm home." "Mwah... Xiao Yi, give me a hug."
Evrore spoke in a babyish tone, lunging forward and wrapping her arms tightly around Lloyd's waist.
"Huh? Did you run into something unpleasant again?" Lloyd asked hurriedly.
Whenever his older sister encountered something upsetting or troublesome, she would hug him just like this. In her own words, this was called "recharging her energy"...
After about two or three seconds, Evrore slowly released her younger brother. Her eyes cleared up once more, and her energy returned. Then, she flashed a sweet smile.
"Hehe, as long as Xiao Yi is by my side, I'm not afraid of anything!" "You shouldn't say things like that so casually!" Lloyd advised quickly, before changing the subject. "So, tell me what happened to you this time?"
Evrore wore a bitter-sweet expression as she replied, "Well... let me go heat up some food for you first, and we can talk while we eat." "All right, and I happen to want to tell you about what I encountered today too." "Eh? Did another girl confess to my Xiao Yi?" "Why is it 'again'? Things like that have never happened, okay?" "Hehe, it's bound to happen often in the future. Once Xiao Yi meets a wonderful girl, gets smoothly married, and has a cute little Xiao Yi, then I'll be..." "Ahem, Sister, I'm hungry." "Okay, okay, I'm going to heat up the food right now. Xiao Yi, wait just a moment."
With that, Evrore picked up her little stool and scurried off to the kitchen.
Lloyd walked over to the desk in the living room and looked at the huge stack of letters. They were all addressed to that kind-hearted Miss Desta.
"Love letters? Or urging letters from readers for new chapters? No... Sister definitely wouldn't bring letters like this home."
As he spoke, he noticed several opened sheets of paper scattered carelessly on the desk and glanced at them:
"Dearest Miss Desta: This is the culmination of three years of painstaking effort, consuming countless inspirations and creative ideas. Please enjoy— *The God of War Reborn: I Became the Kept Son-in-Law of the Veto Saint* Chapter One: The God of War Grievously Wronged ...... ......"
After reading a few lines, Lloyd put on the expression of an elderly person looking at a smartphone in the subway.
As for another letter nearby, the title read: *The Secret Erotic History of the Veto Saint*.
What on earth were these? Lloyd was dumbfounded, and couldn't help but wonder if the fickle Miss Desta had given up on folklore studies and decided to transition into the literary field.
"So bizarre! Let me take another look... Mhm, and this time with a critical eye!"
He muttered an excuse to himself and picked up the second letter, checking the author's signature first: *The Worst Woman in This World*
He ended up reading this one for quite a while, until he heard his sister's voice from behind: "Xiao Yi, the food is ready. Come on over."
Lloyd quickly put the letter down and went to help set the dining table. Just as Evrore climbed into her high-backed chair hands and knees, she suddenly asked, "Xiao Yi, why is your face so red? Hehe, so cute..." "N-nothing much, the weather is a bit hot..." Lloyd fumbled for an excuse, feeling the embarrassment of someone whose older sister had discovered a secret stash of embarrassing items under their bed.
He hurriedly changed the subject and asked about the letters on the table.
"Those are all submissions we solicited. Miss Desta thought that relying solely on our own collection of folklore and legends was still too slow, so she placed an advertisement to solicit them from everyone in the city. She just didn't expect to receive so many letters..."
As Evrore spoke, she frowned slightly, wearing the troubled and helpless expression of an adult—which formed a unique contrast with her childishly cute appearance. She continued, "It's just that many of the submissions aren't folklore at all. There are poems, plays, all kinds of novels, and people taking the opportunity to send love letters to Miss Desta, and even things like... like..."
As she spoke, her cute face flushed with a faint pink hue, making her look like a sweet little apple.
"So Miss Desta handed the task of screening the manuscripts over to you?" "That's right, so I have to finish reading them as soon as possible... How are things over on your end, Xiao Yi? Did you make any new friends?" "No, on the contrary, that half-friend of mine almost didn't make it..."
Lloyd then recounted his experiences of the day to his sister, concluding with a sigh, "Fortunately, he pulled through in the end."
"Yeah!" Evrore nodded vigorously, looking relieved as well. "Although I haven't met him yet, I feel that Mr. Buster is a very good person, willing to impart his unique skills to you. Even if it's not for the sake of pure friendship, well, everyone is like that anyway..." "Anyway, I hope he gets better soon so he can make it in time for his daughter's birthday... Oh right, should we also prepare a gift? To thank him for taking care of Xiao Yi during this time? If there's anything he needs, we can help out too."
Lloyd also nodded firmly. "We should. Tomorrow I'll go find out where he lives first."
His older sister had been like this since childhood; she would always remember the kindness others showed her.
……………………
When he arrived at Tower No. 9 the next day, Lloyd didn't rush over to the notice board to grab a key. Instead, he found Viya's office first and knocked on the door.
"Come in."
Lloyd pushed the door open and saw Viya standing by the window holding a cup of coffee. Her black uniform was impeccably neat, outlining her alluring curves in the sunlight filtering through the window. She looked like a cold yet dazzling black rose. Her slender legs stood straight, the black stockings wrapping them showing a hint of alluring flesh under the light. The desk beside her was as clean and tidy as ever, completely devoid of any decorative items.
"What is it?" Viya took a small sip of her coffee and asked.
Lloyd stated his purpose: "I wanted to ask about the Enforcer Buster. He was sent to the asylum yesterday, but doesn't he still have a daughter who needs to be cared for?"
Viya fell silent for a moment. Then she put down her coffee, retrieved a file from the filing cabinet nearby, flipped through it for a moment, and said, "His daughter and wife unfortunately perished in an accident three years ago..."
