James, in this state, no longer resembled a messenger of God, nor was he the refined gentleman he once appeared to be. He looked more like a clown, performing a grotesque dance at the very edge of the pier.
The islanders on the shore had shaken off their trance, feeling fortunate that they hadn't been entirely lost. They knew, of course, that it was the stranger who had helped them, preventing them from being deceived by the devil and falling into the abyss.
And so, their hatred for James deepened.
