The originally serene and solemn space was ruthlessly drowned out by a surging, chaotic roar of voices. The crowd surged madly toward the stage. The gentlemen and noblewomen who usually wore magnificent gowns and carried themselves with elegance and poise had entirely shed their former reserve and grace. They shoved one another, their steps hurried and panicked, their exquisite leather shoes and high heels leaving chaotic, unsightly scuffs across the polished floor, as if mocking the absurdity of this farce.
