The fifteen million people from the European Bloc were gaunt and sallow, their cheeks sunken, their eyes vacant. By all rights, such a massive crowd should have been buzzing with chatter or even the occasional commotion. Instead, they were unnervingly silent, swaying like stalks of wheat in the wind. This was the result of prolonged starvation; their eyes held a hollow, desperate craving for food, mixed with numbness and confusion.
