Zhang Sheng lived in a village in Jiangnan called Beihu Village. To its east lay Dongjiang Village, to its south Nanwan Village, and to its west Xihai Village. These four villages were separated by towering mountain ranges and lakes of varying widths, requiring people to either cross the mountains or take boats by water to reach one another. Enclosed by these four villages, right in the center of the flat terrain, was Wuling Town. Wuling Town was directly administered by Bailing County due to its abundance of high-quality tea. Fortunately, one could easily reach Wuling Town from Beihu Village or Nanwan Village by walking along a flat, seven-to-eight-li gravel road. Conversely, getting to the town from Dongjiang Village or Xihai Village required crossing several mountains.
