Before he knew it, winter had arrived in Jiangnan. Every morning, thick, milky-white mist draped across the mountain forests, making it hard to see anything even a few meters away. Yet the fishermen of Qingzhou Village, resting quietly on the banks of the Changchun River, had no fear of the mist. Every morning at dawn, they still sailed their small boats out onto the river to cast their nets and catch fish. Calculating the days, the Lunar New Year was fast approaching, so they had to work harder to secure an even better harvest. The sun's rays grew weaker by the day. Outside every doorway and upon every rooftop, people were once again drying various mountain goods, dried vegetables, and melons and fruits gathered from the fields. Taking advantage of the winter sun while it was still somewhat warm, they tried to absorb as much sunlight as possible to prevent mold.
