Japan, Kanagawa Prefecture, the southernmost coastline of Yokohama. The docks here were utterly desolate, battered by wave upon wave crashing against the jagged rocks along the shore. Before World War II, fishermen had left traces of their lives here, but after day-after-day weathering by the sea breeze, only dilapidated wooden shacks and the wreckage of fishing boats stretched endlessly along the coastline, ruined beyond repair. To this day, the fishermen of the past had long since moved into nearby Yokohama for better prospects, and those with greater ambitions had gone to Tokyo; this place was ignored year-round. But tonight, two pale beams of light pierced the darkness—the xenon headlights of a black Hummer, looking like the glowing pupils of a ferocious beast. It carved two long, fresh tire tracks across the saline-alkali flats along the coastline, executing a sharp, half-circle drift before coming to a halt at the water's edge.
