Akihabara is an electronics district in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, Japan, keeping pace with the cutting-edge industries of the era. It also goes by another name... "The Otaku's Dream Paradise." Akihabara sits just outside the eastern gate of old Tokyo, boasting well over a thousand shops. After World War II, it grew into a black market selling rare, high-end electronics. From the 1950s to the 1980s, its stores began mass-selling civilian electronic devices such as televisions, refrigerators, VCRs, and game consoles. Today, the most popular spots are electronics stores, model and toy shops, anime merchandise stores, and themed cafes. A wide variety of storefronts stand side by side in Akihabara, while new office buildings and retail complexes rise one after another. During peak tourist season, the commercial profit generated on this street in a single day roughly equals the entire year's expenses of an underdeveloped small town.
