Akihabara sits just outside the eastern gate of old Tokyo, boasting well over a thousand shops. After World War II, it grew into a black market selling rare, high-end electronics. From the 1950s to the 1980s, its stores began mass-selling civilian electronic devices such as televisions, refrigerators, VCRs, and game consoles.
Today, the most popular spots are electronics stores, model and toy shops, anime merchandise stores, and themed cafes. A wide variety of storefronts stand side by side in Akihabara, while new office buildings and retail complexes rise one after another.
