Traffic was a bit congested on the road from Tokyo to Chiba in the afternoon. There were plenty of vehicles on the street, and whenever the traffic lights changed, the stream of cars backed up at the intersections like a massive, heavy barrier. Yet today's traffic conditions were exceptionally bizarre. The volume of cars was no less than usual, but they were all moving in a rather strange manner. The cars on the main highway leading from Tokyo to Chiba had pulled over and stopped on the road; without any traffic accidents or disputes, the traffic flow had simply frozen. They remained motionless even when the light turned green, making it look as though the workers were staging a collective strike. As for the main highway leading from Chiba to Tokyo, the situation was even more exaggerated. All the cars on the three wide main lanes were "squeezed" into the single lane hugging the shoulder, leaving the two broad central lanes completely empty—just like medieval Europe, where commoners cleared the wide road for an approaching noble's carriage.
