North of Canglang City lay Gravel Beach. The name was not the least bit exaggerated. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but grayish-white, jagged rocks eroded and riddled with holes by the wind and sand. Some were as large as houses, others as small as millstones, interlocking and blanketing the entire barren beach until they faded into the distant lead-gray horizon. There was no grass, no trees, only a few tufts of withered, thorny camel thorn struggling for survival in the crevices of the stones.
