Thirty miles north of Canglang City lay the Gravel Beach. The name could not have been more apt. As far as the eye could see, the ground was covered with grayish-white, sharp-edged stones. Some were as large as millstones, while others were no bigger than fists, piled layer upon layer all the way to the leaden horizon in the distance. The cold wind found greater freedom here, whipping up fine sand and dust as it let out a sharp howl, sounding like countless wronged souls weeping.
