Paranoia, mania, depersonalization, affective disorders—Miki Kashiwagi recognized none of these terms. As an internal medicine student, of course she had no reason to commit psychiatric medical jargon to memory. Still, she had heard them often enough back in university. Across the hall from her dorm lived four guys majoring in psychiatry, notorious for turning out the lights early and staying up late. Not that they were gay—it was just that all four of them walked around muttering constantly and practically lived like woodlice, growing deeply distressed if the curtains let in even a sliver of sunlight. Physicians cannot heal themselves, after all—so after a certain rainy day in her junior year, the dorm room across the hall was sealed up permanently. Miki never saw them again, leaving behind only a tome heavier than the *Necronomicon* to prove they had ever existed.
