After successfully retreating from the perimeter of the Japanese Army camp, Leitao hurried along according to his predetermined plan, intent on reuniting with the guerrillas as quickly as possible. As he rushed along the way, he spotted a gray wolf lying at the base of a tree by the side of the road. Instinctively, Leitao drew the pistol from his waist and leveled it at the wolf with practiced ease. However, after a brief standoff, he realized that the wolf was dying and showed no signs of aggression. He slowly holstered his weapon, his wariness easing slightly. He approached the wolf with cautious, measured steps. Only when he was close enough to look closely did he realize that the wolf’s right hind leg was injured; sharp wooden splinters were embedded in the wound, and the surrounding fur was matted with blood. A complex mix of emotions stirred in Leitao. After a moment of internal conflict, he decided to help.
