Leitao rode his motorcycle into downtown Shanghai like a gale. The roar of the engine was deafening, sending pedestrians scurrying in terror. Before long, however, he was intercepted by a Japanese Marine roadblock. The soldiers raised their rifles, their eyes glinting with a viciousness that suggested Leitao was nothing more than their prey.
Leitao’s eyes turned icy in an instant. Fury etched across his face, he let out a string of curses. He quickly killed the engine, pulled the key, dismounted, and stalked toward one of the soldiers with fire in his eyes. He raised his hand and dealt the man a resounding slap. "Smack!" The soldier staggered, nearly falling, a red handprint blooming on his face as blood trickled from his lip.
Leitao produced a forged major’s identification card, flashed it before the soldier, and barked in perfect Tokyo-dialect Japanese, "Baka! You bunch of idiots!" His eyes widened until they seemed ready to pop, his facial muscles twitched with rage, and veins bulged on his forehead.
