After a day of hard travel, Leitao arrived at the deserted village where the guerrillas had been temporarily stationed as night fell. He searched the village inside and out, full of anticipation, yet he could not find a single soul. His brow furrowed, and he could not help but mutter to himself, "Could something have gone wrong?" Suddenly, his gaze was drawn to the shocking traces on the ground: pockmarked craters, bloodstains, and chaotic, crisscrossing footprints. Leitao’s heart tightened instantly. A sensation of being watched from the shadows washed over him, making his scalp prickle. Leitao keenly realized that under the cold moonlight, a Japanese Army sniper must have been aiming a rifle at him. A single moment of carelessness could cost him his life.
