We were all staring at the firelight, which was gradually growing larger as it drew near. When the light came close enough for us to vaguely make out the outline of a boat, the entire row of fires on the opposite bank instantly went out. Even the moonlight seemed affected, losing its brightness. In the darkness, the firelight on the boat was exceptionally conspicuous. As it slowly approached, its outline grew clearer and clearer.
