Chapter 5

Holding the gaming helmet, I could distinctly feel my heartbeat accelerating. Half a year had passed, and I was finally walking back down the familiar path of gaming!
Unlike before, this time I was playing an online game. Although I heard that whether one could succeed in Yueheng depended on individual gaming talent, I had no certainty in my heart. Gaming talent? That was something as illusory as a mirage.
Putting on the helmet, a sudden coolness washed over my brain. When I came to my senses, I found myself standing at the edge of a cliff in the cold night. Looking down, the lines of my palms were clearly visible—this must be my avatar.
The archaic clothes made me feel quite awkward, but the cold wind blowing across the cliff made the garments flutter, adding a unique flavor. Glancing up at the sky, a moon glowing with a blue light was illuminating the earth, and the empty space beneath my feet was morphing into a gruesome scene of battle.
Amidst the crossing sounds of bugles, neat phalanxes of human cavalry bravely and fearlessly charged forward. The knights brandished the lances and sabers in their hands, sending chills down one's spine with flashes of pale white light. A group of mages, escorted by the knights, slowly moved forward, chanting obscure spells. Huge clusters of fire indiscriminately crashed into the opposing camp, illuminating the dark night as bright as day.
In the firelight, I was shocked to discover that what this human legion was facing turned out to be massive Bone Dragons!
Wretched red dragon wings were stained with pitiful flesh and blood—some belonging to the dragons, some to the human knights. Fireballs crashed against the skeletons of the dragons with a sizzling sound, then vanished.
Beneath the dragons was a pitch-black sea of monsters. Looking closely, I realized they were actually fleshless Skeleton Warriors. Brandishing bone shields and rusted steel swords in their hands, they engaged in a bloody melee with the human knights!
The cavalry's formidable impact tore gap after gap into the skeleton phalanx, only for those gaps to be filled over and over again by the endless skeletons. Knights who penetrated deep into the skeleton horde were instantly isolated, yet they still fought fiercely, piercing the skeletons' ribs with their knightly lances over and over again. When their warhorses fell, they pulled out their sidearms and continued to fight. Fresh blood slowly trickled down their bodies. The Skeleton Warriors seemed truly inexhaustible; whenever a human warrior fell in a pool of blood, their flesh and blood would silently slough off, their eye sockets would gleam with a dim light, and then they would join the ranks of the Skeleton Warriors!
A tangible ripple blossomed in the air, and the Skeleton Warriors within a few meters instantly crumbled into piles of shattered bones. Immediately after, a milky-white light landed on the wounded knight, and the bleeding wounds rapidly healed—the human Priests had finally arrived!
Looking into the distance, dozens of dark Necromancers were concealed behind the skeletons and Bone Dragons. It was they who were manipulating this bloody carnage!
Several blurred figures appeared beside the Necromancers, patiently waiting for an opportunity. Finally, while the Necromancers were concentrating on summoning a second Bone Dragon, a flash of Xuehong light swept across a Necromancer's foul-smelling neck, revealing the chilling edge of a dagger hidden beneath dark cloth.
Cries of agony rose one after another, and the undead forces gradually weakened. Human Thieves had actually turned the tide of battle!
Far off in the rear of the human camp, a group of old, weak, sick, and disabled villagers watched the carnage with wide eyes.
As it turned out, the homeland they were defending with their lives was right behind them!
The two large characters "Yueheng" faintly appeared on the horizon, and the battle below drew to a close.
"Whew~"
I couldn't help letting out a long breath. This promotional video was simply fantastic!
The scene gradually dissolved, and next I appeared at the edge of an open forest. Various operational prompts appeared at the edge of my field of vision. To be honest, operating a game with this level of 70% virtual realism was far more difficult than keyboard controls. Fortunately, I truly possessed some gaming talent. After nearly two hours, relying solely on the keyboard and brainwave commands, I was already able to execute various movements with ease. Once the game officially launched, killing monsters probably wouldn't pose any problems.
It seemed the official website indicated that ordinary people took three days to adapt to the controls of Yueheng, yet I had managed it in just two hours. Could this be the so-called gaming talent?
On second thought, when I played Warcraft 3, I could execute six effective clicks per second. Someone with that kind of operational skill adapting to a new game a bit faster was nothing to write home about. I just wondered if those "old acquaintances" of mine could get the hang of the controls just as fast. Yeqiu that brat had an action speed even faster than mine; if he quit Warcraft to come to Yueheng, he probably wouldn't do poorly either.
"Ding! System prompt!"
"You have been online for eight hours, please rest!"
"This is your first time using this helmet, do you require iris locking?"
I quickly clicked confirm. Having messed around for most of the night, by the time I took off the helmet it was already three in the morning. I hurried to wash up and go to sleep; if Xu Lin saw that I was still awake at three, she definitely wouldn't give me a pleasant look.
Lying in bed, my mind was still lingering on the sensation from the game just now. Such a realistic game was truly something to look forward to. Before the game officially launched, many features had not yet been activated—for instance, pain and taste systems were currently turned off, and there were no characters truly belonging to oneself yet. It was said that a character's facial features in the game were confirmed by scanning the player's actual face through the helmet, allowing for appropriate modifications, but it wouldn't turn a dinosaur into a beauty.
That was fine, too. But a shameless woman like Xinyu would definitely modify her appearance to look even prettier—that way it would be much easier to seduce men... Though she was already quite pretty and could captivate a large crowd of single-celled men without any modifications. Not to mention Lu Xuehan; her face was the kind that made men drool at the mere sight.
Xu Lin was also pretty, but compared to Lu Xuehan she possessed an extra allure and a more mature charm. If the helmet could scan bodies, she would probably choose a Dark Elf female character, which would surely make countless wealthy young scions in the game follow blindly at her heels.
Come to think of it, having been here for half a year, I still wasn't quite sure what her exact status was. She never took clients; although many regular customers made such requests, they were all politely refused by Xu Lin. Xu Lin was also quite good to the staff under her, at least she never skimped on wages and commissions.
Thinking and thinking, I finally drifted into a hazy sleep. When I woke up the next day, the sun was already high in the sky. Fortunately, the others seemed to have played for too long as well, and I turned out to be the first one awake.
