Hong Kong is one of the three special administrative regions. Both in terms of territorial area and resident population, it is far behind Beijing, but its population density is conversely much higher than the latter. With a highly developed economy and flourishing trade, it is teeming with countless media outlets.
Television stations alone feature two terrestrial giants: Hong Kong TV and ATV, alongside numerous small and medium-sized cable networks. Consequently, the competition for program content is extremely fierce; a difference of even 0.1% in ratings can mean a drop of several places in the rankings.
Although Hong Kong TV and ATV firmly hold two-thirds of the market share—their combined audience share has never dropped below 70%—in recent years they have also faced strong challenges from Pearl and Hong Kong Cable TV, with both program resources and ratings being gradually eroded.
