Chapter 10

Jiang Manni frowned. What kind of drama was Yu Shanshan trying to pull now?
Before long, Yu Shanshan came out, carrying a breakfast bag from "Song's Silken Noodles."
Even from a distance, Jiang Manni could catch the appetizing aroma.
Who bought her breakfast?
Could it be Lin Yi?
Jiang Manni couldn't think of anyone else.
She had been to the shop on that breakfast bag, and it was quite far from the residential complex. Did Lin Yi really run all the way out there to buy breakfast for Yu Shanshan?
Seeing the broad smile on Yu Shanshan's face, an unspeakable heaviness suddenly welled up in Jiang Manni's heart.
Although Lin Yi had treated her to breakfast before, it was always the three of them together; he had never gone out of his way to buy anything just for her.
Carrying her breakfast, Yu Shanshan skipped happily back to the classroom. Lin Yi really didn't let her down. She had to eat quickly, or it would get cold and lose its flavor.
The aroma of silken noodles wafted through the classroom, and many classmates couldn't help glancing at Yu Shanshan.
"Shanshan, give me a bite. I haven't had their noodles in ages."
A girl hurried over to Yu Shanshan's side.
Yu Shanshan ignored her completely. Lin Yi bought this for her, and she wasn't going to share it with anyone else.
"Hmph, I've already had breakfast anyway. Look how stingy you are."
The girl complained.
"What's that smell? It's awful."
Jiang Manni stood up and pushed all the classroom windows wide open. The clattering noise made Yu Shanshan want to laugh out loud.
Looks like someone just had their defenses shattered!
Jiang Manni's petty little thoughts were practically written all over her face.
Awful?
Hehe, you'd love to eat some, but you don't even have any.
To put it mildly, Yu Shanshan had seen right through Jiang Manni long ago. At her core, Jiang Manni was a completely selfish person!
Her behavior right now definitely wasn't because she cared about Lin Yi; she was just upset that something she considered hers had been snatched away.
What's more, the person who took it happened to be someone she couldn't stand, which made it all the harder for her to accept.
The only reason Yu Shanshan asked Lin Yi to buy the silken noodles was because she actually wanted to eat them. She had no intention of provoking Jiang Manni—Jiang Manni had just shattered her own composure.
She now regarded Lin Yi as a friend, definitely not some tool to be used. It was just a pity the college entrance exams were right around the corner.
Judging by their interactions over the past two days, Lin Yi had a pretty good personality. Sigh, she hoped they could stay in touch afterwards.
"Shanshan, who bought this for you?"
The girl knew Yu Shanshan too well. Shanshan's house wasn't close to Song's shop at all, and making her wake up early was practically harder than murder.
Yu Shanshan kept quiet. The college entrance exams were just around the corner, and if Old Hu caught wind of any gossip, Lin Yi would definitely catch flak for it again.
She didn't have many friends to begin with, so she certainly couldn't cause trouble for Lin Yi.
"And you said nothing was going on between you two. For three whole years, have you ever bought me breakfast?"
The chubby boy's gaze was full of bitter resentment. That scoundrel Lin Yi was truly someone who favored sex over friendship.
"Are you out of your damn mind?"
Lin Yi desperately wanted to retort, but there were just too many things to complain about.
"Jokes aside, the college entrance exams are right here. Don't go playing with fire."
The chubby boy dropped the smile from his face. Lin Yi's grades were average—not quite at the top, but well clear of the bottom—so he could still be salvaged.
"You don't say."
Lin Yi couldn't be bothered to explain. Since he had made a promise to Yu Shanshan, he had to follow through.
"Do you think they're actually dating?"
"No way. How could Yu Shanshan ever fancy Lin Yi?"
"They've been hanging out together every lunch hour these past two days. If you ask me, something's definitely going on."
"You're overthinking it. Aside from having a rich family, does Lin Yi have any other redeeming qualities?"
"The college entrance exams are right around the corner. Isn't dating right now a sign of a completely broken brain?"
Several boys huddled together, whispering among themselves.
Lin Yi picked up his test paper and walked over toward the math class representative.
"What's going on between you and Yu Shanshan?"
Sister Wenjing smiled faintly. Gossip was rare in the third year of high school, and she hadn't had any juicy details to chew on for a long time.
"Just fetched her some breakfast. Can you check if I solved this problem correctly?"
Lin Yi pulled a packet of fruit gummies from his pocket and placed it on Sister Wenjing's desk.
"Mhm, this is a trick question..."
Sister Wenjing picked up the test paper to inspect it. Since this wasn't a key high school, plenty of students in the class had already given up trying.
It was rare for a classmate to ask for help with a problem, and as long as it didn't interfere with her own studies, she was more than happy to lend a hand.
Time flew by.
"I won't stick around to be a third wheel."
As the morning classes ended and she saw Yu Shanshan appear at the classroom door, Wu Zheng turned back to tease Lin Yi.
Lin Yi couldn't be bothered with him.
Yu Shanshan stood in the doorway, grinning silently.
"What do you want to eat?"
Lin Yi asked with a smile. Based on Sister Wenjing's verification, the math problems Yu Shanshan had solved were completely error-free, which really made him look at her in a new light.
"Anything's fine. I'm not very hungry."
Yu Shanshan's eyes were bright, looking clear and lovely.
"Let me tell you, this morning..."
As the two walked into the cafeteria, Yu Shanshan recounted what had happened in the classroom that morning.
Lin Yi didn't offer any comments. The reason Jiang Manni acted that way was purely driven by a sense of possession, perhaps mixed with lingering dissatisfaction toward Yu Shanshan.
He had experienced that exact kind of possessiveness himself; when Qiyue had first transferred in, he had been terrified that his best friend would be stolen away.
Possessiveness wasn't something confined to romance—friendships worked the exact same way, and he had indeed treated Jiang Manni quite well in the past.
"Will you teach me how to shoot hoops?"
After lunch, Yu Shanshan took the initiative to speak up.
"Didn't you play pretty well yesterday?"
Thinking of Yu Shanshan's clumsy performance yesterday noon, Lin Yi couldn't help laughing.
"Not going to teach me? Then don't blame me."
Yu Shanshan's gaze was full of threat—yes, a genuine threat.
"Let's go."
Lin Yi could clearly feel the pressure.
"Looks like they're getting along quite well."
Watching their retreating figures, a strange glint flashed across Qiyue's eyes.
He had noticed Yu Shanshan the moment he transferred to the school, but unfortunately, she hadn't given him the time of day.
"Let's head back."
Jiang Manni didn't feel much like talking. Even though she only viewed Lin Yi as a friend, seeing him so chummy with Yu Shanshan still made her blood boil.
"Yeah."
The sneer at the corner of Qiyue's mouth vanished in a flash.
The crowd gathered for basketball had clearly grown quite a bit. Lin Yi didn't even have to guess to know they were all there for Yu Shanshan.
"Spread your fingers, form a right angle with your upper and lower arm, put your left hand on the side, aim for the rim, and shoot—"
Standing right behind Yu Shanshan, Lin Yi adjusted her shooting posture.
"It's definitely going in this time."
Clumsily, Yu Shanshan tossed the basketball away.
Clang—
"Why are you so clumsy?"
Lin Yi was losing patience. Yu Shanshan was awful at the game yet insisted on playing, and all the boys who showed up to play kept letting her win, ruining all the fun for him.
"You're just a bad teacher."
Yu Shanshan refused to admit she was clumsy. He was losing patience after just a few tries?
She was determined to sink a basket today, or she wouldn't let Lin Yi play either.
"Shooting hoops isn't actually that hard. How about I teach you instead?"
A boy walked up to Yu Shanshan, a brilliant smile on his face.
