Outside the door was a straight, dim corridor where the faint light barely illuminated the surroundings. Large prison cells lined both sides. One side held men of all ages, from youths to the elderly. They slumped and leaned against one another, looking like hollow skeletons drained of vitality. Others curled up in corners, trying to find escape, but the space was so crowded that not an inch of separation could be found between their bodies. A foul, unpleasant stench drifted from a heap of straw.
