Chapter 16

1,455 words7 minutes read

The scene was dead silent for a moment.
Xuē Yī and Zhū Bì were silenced by Sū Hào's words.
"So it really was you! Old Master treated you so well, and you actually murdered your father?!"
Xuē Èr could never have imagined that his elder brother's family would be so wicked. He rushed forward and beat Xuē Yī violently.
Xuē Yī also didn't expect his usually timid brother to dare to attack him. Caught off guard, he was beaten and could not fight back, quickly falling to the ground clutching his stomach.
"You crazy brat, you actually hit your brother?!"
"You're the one who's crazy! You can actually poison your own father. You're not even human, worse than pigs and dogs. I'll kill you!"
Xuē Èr was furious. Sitting on Xuē Yī, he beat him like a maddened beast, causing him to cry out in pain repeatedly.
Director Sūn, worried that something serious might happen, turned to Xuē Róu and said, "Try to persuade your dad. If someone actually dies, it'll be bad for you."
Although Xuē Róu was angry, she knew the seriousness of the situation and immediately rushed forward, pulling Xuē Èr off.
"Okay Dad, we don't have concrete evidence yet. If you really hurt him badly, it'll be hard to explain to Grandpa."
"What evidence? It's definitely them, this couple, who did it!"
Xuē Èr had never been so assertive in his life, roaring with rage.
"You shameless beasts! It's a good thing the old man is okay this time. If anything happened to him, I'd make your whole family pay with their lives!"
"How dare you!"
Just then, the ward door was pushed open, and Xuē Àohán entered with a group of bodyguards.
She bent down to help her father up, her sharp eyes glaring, and angrily rebuked Xuē Èr, "You keep saying my parents poisoned Grandpa. Do you have proof?"
"My parents weren't looking after Grandpa at noon; they went to my uncle's to play cards. Auntie Qín was helping to watch Grandpa."
"I only called my parents over when it was your turn to take over, to avoid being discovered."
At this point, Xuē Yī and Zhū Bì looked somewhat embarrassed.
Their father was gravely ill, and they had gone out to play; it was indeed inhumane.
"In conclusion, this matter has absolutely nothing to do with my parents. Whether you believe it or not, we have clear consciences."
Xuē Àohán spoke very loudly, with strong confidence, not seeming like she was lying.
"Dad, Mom, we don't have to endure this injustice. We worked ourselves to the bone looking after Grandpa and still got blamed. Since they think you're not capable, let them look after him. You're old and not useful anyway. If you don't have to do this dirty work anymore, at least you won't be wrongly accused!"
With that said, Xuē Àohán pulled her parents towards the door.
"Old Xuē's situation hasn't been clarified. No one is allowed to leave," Director Sūn said sternly, blocking the door.
Xuē Àohán wanted to say something but stopped.
Although she had brought many elite bodyguards from Zhào Tài, dealing with Director Sūn would be easy, but Director Sūn had extensive connections among colleagues and fellow disciples in various hospitals. She couldn't afford to offend him, or she wouldn't be able to get help if she had health problems in the future.
Xuē Yī, afraid that Xuē Àohán would clash with Director Sūn, quickly said, "Àohán, Grandpa's condition is still being observed. Let's wait and see."
"Alright, then we'll stay for half an hour. We still have to see Zhào Tài later, and it's not appropriate to be dressed like this."
Zhū Bì's eyes lit up upon hearing Xuē Àohán's words.
"Young Master Zhao invited us to his home? That's wonderful!"
Although Zhào Tài and Xuē Àohán had been getting along famously recently, and he had even proposed, the gap between the Xuē Family and the Zhào Family was not small. Zhū Bì had never truly considered that Xuē Àohán could marry into the Zhào Family; she only thought about squeezing as much money out of Zhào Tài as possible.
Who would have thought that Zhào Tài would actually invite them for a meal? This was clearly a step towards meeting the parents and entering the gates of marriage.
Xuē Yī was also extremely excited.
He changed his dejected appearance from earlier and said to Xuē Èr, "Considering I didn't take good care of the old man at noon and he was poisoned, I won't hold your hitting me against you."
"Since you are so good at taking care of people, you can look after the old man from now on. I'm too lazy to argue with you over those things anymore."
Xuē Yī had come to terms with it.
With a Divine Doctor like Sū Hào protecting them, it was unlikely the old man would die anytime soon. The hope of dividing the family fortune would likely be dashed.
Not to mention, the old man liked Sū Hào so much that even if the fortune were to be divided, the lion's share would surely go to Xuē Èr's family.
Adding in other relatives, what would reach him would probably be a tiny bit.
Since that was the case, he didn't need to waste more energy on these people. It was better to flatter Zhào Tài and place his hopes on his daughter.
If his daughter could really achieve greatness and become the matriarch of the Zhào Family, then his lifetime of wealth and glory would be inexhaustible. Would he still care about the old man's meager possessions?
"Whether you poisoned him or not is yet to be verified. Stop making such a fuss," Director Sūn said with a dark expression.
Just as Xuē Yī was about to say something, Sū Hào suddenly changed the subject, "It wasn't them."
"Hmm?"
Xuē Róu was startled and asked, "How do you know?"
"I just discovered that the poison Grandpa Xuē was given has a strong adsorptive quality. If they were the ones who administered it, they would have some of the toxin on them. Moreover, this poison cannot be eliminated by physical or chemical means," Sū Hào said word by word.
"I didn't find any toxin on them. Their earlier nervousness was purely because they didn't look after Grandpa Xuē at noon and feared being labeled as unfilial."
Sū Hào didn't mention one other thing: Daoist Magic/Arts had Karma Threads. Within a three-meter radius, if people had a causal relationship with an event, their threads would intertwine.
He had secretly activated his pháp nhãn earlier, and the result showed that Grandpa Xuē's poisoning had no causal relationship with Xuē Yī and the others. The culprit was someone else.
Féng Zhōngyī fully believed Sū Hào's words and said to Director Sūn, "Let them go. They'll only be a nuisance here."
Clearly, he didn't like the character of Xuē Yī's family.
Director Sūn didn't hesitate either and ushered Xuē Yī and his group out as if chasing them away, then tightly closed the door.
"Mr. Sū, that set of silver needles you're holding... could it be a treasure of the Ancient Sect – the Ice Soul Silver Needles?!"
Sū Hào was astonished. "You have quite the insight. You even know about the Ice Soul Silver Needles. I thought you were just an ignoramus."
Upon hearing this, Director Sūn's eyes twitched, and he showed an expression of astonishment.
Féng Zhōngyī was a national-level Divine Doctor, yet Sū Hào called him an ignoramus? This kid, while skilled, was perhaps too arrogant?
Unexpectedly, Féng Zhōngyī took it in stride, even smiling apologetically. "Compared to Mr. Sū, I truly am an ignoramus. I couldn't even diagnose Old Xuē's poisoning."
"In the entire Chinese medicine community, besides my fellow disciples from my sect, there are probably only a few who could diagnose it. Let alone someone of your ordinary skill level, so there's no need to feel ashamed," Sū Hào said. His words were clearly meant to comfort, but they sounded quite harsh.
Before Xuē Róu could ask Sū Hào to speak more tactfully, Féng Zhōngyī's breathing quickened, and he further inquired, "Mr. Sū, may I ask if you came down from Nameless Mountain?"
"How did you know?"
But upon hearing Sū Hào's reply, Féng Zhōngyī, without another word, knelt down before him.
"You... what are you doing?"
Sū Hào was somewhat taken aback. Even if his abilities were extraordinary, he shouldn't cause an elderly man to kneel before him. It was surely shortening his lifespan!
Who knew that as Sū Hào prepared to help Féng Zhōngyī up, Féng Zhōngyī respectfully kowtowed.
"Martial Uncle, please accept this Martial Nephew's bow!"
