Chapter 5

I was silent because I was hoping for a divorce even more.
Qin Di was silent, likely feeling that she had been bullied by me while her best friend had let me off so easily.
While I was recovering from my injuries and constantly hypnotizing myself into believing I was Xu Zhi, time flew by.
In the blink of an eye, the day arrived when Xu Zhi was able to speak out.
For the past few days, I had been waiting for Xu Zhi to gather his consciousness and emerge, hoping to quickly familiarize myself with his situation so I could get on with what I came here to do.
After much anticipation, Xu Zhi finally appeared. I asked him many questions about his situation, and he answered me very cheerfully.
The reason he was so cheerful was because Changxia had said she was not getting a divorce after all.
As for the marriage between Xu Zhi and Changxia, I had my own understanding of it.
During the single hour I had, aside from understanding some key aspects of Xu Zhi's situation, I had reserved some time to have a good chat with him about Changxia.
"I say, Qiu Zhi, we still have time. Why aren't you asking anything else?" Xu Zhi asked, somewhat puzzled.
"Xu Zhi, I want to talk to you about some other matters."
"Huh? What do you want to talk about?"
"The system told me that during your first coma, you could actually have gone to reincarnation. Why did you struggle and refuse to do so?"
"..."
"Is it because of Changxia?"
"..."
"Regarding Changxia, I want to share my thoughts."
"...Go ahead."
"First, this body can only survive for less than five years. When that time comes, what will happen to Changxia?"
"...The money from my family will be enough for her."
"Don't you still have your older brother?"
"Our brotherhood is so strong..."
"Do you mean you still intend for her to remain a widow?"
"...Not necessarily, she can find someone else..."
"Then why not let her find someone now?"
"..."
"She is thirty years old now and has no children. Isn't she much easier to find someone for now than after she is thirty-five?"
"..."
"Xu Zhi, do you love her?"
"Of course, she is the woman I love most!"
...
This chat with Xu Zhi yielded no results. In the end, Xu Zhi even mentioned that his consciousness was getting weaker by the day, and he didn't know if he would be able to appear on schedule two months from now.
After that dinner with the three of us, Changxia had once asked me if I wanted to move back to our shared home, and I told her we would see about it later.
Changxia seemed somewhat surprised. "Ever since you lost your memory, you seem a bit different."
I gave a noncommittal response.
Of course I was different—even my core had changed, and I was a woman now.
Another reason I was reluctant to move back was Liang Ze.
Living with Liang Ze was simply too wonderful.
As a doctor, Liang Ze was very neat. Whenever he had free time, he would clean the house.
Having been brothers with Xu Zhi for many years, he had always treated Xu Zhi very well.
Being able to live with someone who was tall, handsome, gentle, hygienic, and treated you well felt like entering paradise!
The only minor drawback was that he would occasionally ask how my recovery down there was coming along, which I generally just brushed off with vague answers.
One day, I stared at the ceiling with a troubled expression.
There were only five years in total, and five months had already passed without me finding any way to handle that matter.
Glancing casually at my phone contacts, a sudden flash of inspiration struck me. I remembered that Liang Ze was a doctor and Qin Di was a headhunter.
I had it—haha.
When Liang Ze came home from work, he found me grinning at him.
"What's wrong? That smile of yours is giving me the creeps."
"Liang Ze, aren't you a famous doctor?"
"I wouldn't call myself famous, just an ordinary doctor."
"Don't be so modest. By the way, as a well-known doctor, you must know a lot of people, right?"
"Not really..."
"Do you happen to know someone named Qu Songhe?"
"Um... let me think... No, I don't know anyone with that surname at all."
"Think again—leaders, colleagues, friends, patients, people around your patients... none of them?"
"Um... truly none."
"Oh well..."
"What's the matter? Is there something you need this person for?"
"Ah? It's nothing..."
"I'll keep an eye out for you in the future."
"Great, thanks."
"Why are you being so polite between good brothers?"
Since Liang Ze didn't know him, I pinned my hopes on Qin Di.
However, I didn't plan to go to her directly myself; instead, I intended to reach her through Changxia.
A man and his wife's best friend waking up disheveled in the same bed—such a melodramatic situation meant that both Changxia and Qin Di probably harbored misgivings in their hearts, so I had no intention of having any private contact with Qin Di again.
"Xiaoxia," I called out softly, seeing as I needed a favor.
Changxia looked at me. Several times since we first met, whenever I called her Xiaoxia, she would wear a surprised expression. I never knew what she was surprised about.
But this time, I understood.
"You used to call me wiiii-fe in such a sickeningly sweet way, dragging out the vowels and making me want to punch you every time. But ever since you lost your memory, you haven't called me wife anymore."
"...I forgot to ask earlier, how did you know I lost my memory? I don't think I told you directly."
"Xiaodi told me. Xiaodi said you told her when you drank too much at the nightclub and stayed over at her place that day."
"Are you two that close?"
"Of course, our two families are family friends, and we grew up together since we were kids. Xiaodi has always been exceptionally good to me."
"Does Xiaodi's family run a headhunting company?"
"Huh? Yes, why?"
"I just figured that running a headhunting company means she must know a lot of people?"
"Her family is so wealthy; she'd know a lot of people even if she didn't run a headhunting company." Changxia smiled, seeming to be in a very good mood today.
"Well, here's the thing. I'm looking for someone named Qu Songhe. I don't know if Xiaodi happens to know him or if she could find him."
"What are you looking for him for?"
"We had some business cooperation before, and now that we've made a profit and plan to split it, I can't find him anywhere. I certainly can't just pocket someone else's money."
"...You shouldn't pocket it, but when did you get involved in other business? Haven't you just been coasting along in the Xu Family enterprises?"
It was a good thing Xu Zhi had told me a lot about his affairs, otherwise it really would have been hard to answer his wife.
"Didn't I go to City B on a business trip before? That's where we talked business."
"Oh, then just ask Xiaodi directly and see what she says."
"Well, men and women should keep their distance. Could I trouble you to ask her for me?"
"Now you know men and women should keep their distance? How come you didn't know that night?"
As expected, she still remembered.
But I didn't refute her, because I had no idea what had happened either. That night, I had clearly gone to the guest bedroom as Qin Di instructed, only to wake up with the two of us sleeping together.
Ouch, I couldn't think about it. Just thinking about it made my whole body ache, especially...
However, a silent man was viewed by a woman as having a guilty conscience.
"You really still have lingering feelings for Xiaodi, don't you? You pursued her for four years in college, and only when she rejected you did you start pursuing me instead?" Changxia said indignantly.
Did something like that actually happen? I had thought Xu Zhi's five-year pursuit of Changxia was deeply affectionate, only to find out he had spent four years pursuing Qin Di first.
Chasing best friends in turn—seriously, tsk tsk.
It seemed I would have to ask Xu Zhi what was going on between him and Qin Di next time.
Seeing me fall silent again, Changxia took it as my tacit admission.
That was fine; I wanted a quick divorce to get my business done anyway, and Changxia wouldn't be delayed any further.
Only, for the moment...
