After defeating Qin Hao at the Martial Arts Tournament, Lin Chen thought he would finally get a moment to catch his breath and adjust his condition for the upcoming matches. However, fate always seemed to favor unexpected twists.
The organizers of the tournament suddenly announced a brand-new rule, catching all the competitors off guard. According to the new regulation, every fighter would face an additional random challenge. The opponents for these trials were not the ones originally scheduled, but hidden experts specially arranged by the organizers. This sudden development caused an uproar among both the contestants and the spectators.
Standing in the competitor rest area, Lin Chen furrowed his brows slightly, secretly pondering the motives behind this new rule. He knew full well that the path of martial arts was never smooth sailing, and that every challenge presented an opportunity for growth. Yet, this unexpected change undoubtedly heightened the uncertainty and difficulty of the competition.
"Lin Chen, who knows what kind of opponent we'll draw this time? It really leaves me feeling uneasy," Xiao Xue said anxiously from beside him.
Lin Chen glanced at her and replied calmly, "No matter who the opponent is, we can only give it our all."
At that moment, the drawing ceremony began. The contestants stepped forward one by one to draw their opponents in a tense and solemn atmosphere. When Lin Chen's turn came, he took a deep breath and reached into the ballot box, pulling out a slip of paper. Opening it up, he saw an unfamiliar name written across it: Black Shadow.
"Black Shadow? I've never heard of this person. I wonder what kind of master he is," Lin Chen muttered to himself.
Guided by the staff, Lin Chen arrived at the new arena. Standing on the opposite side was a mysterious figure completely shrouded in a black cloak. His face was obscured, and nothing could be sensed from him except an aura of biting cold.
The surrounding spectators began to whisper and murmur among themselves.
"That Black Shadow looks unfathomable. I'm afraid Lin Chen has run into a tough opponent this time."
"Yeah, who knows where this Black Shadow popped out from? I hope Lin Chen can handle him."
"Let the match begin!" the referee's voice rang out.
The Black Shadow moved instantly. His figure was like a ghost, arriving right in front of Lin Chen in the blink of an eye and launching a fierce palm strike right off the bat. Reacting quickly, Lin Chen sidestepped to dodge and threw a punch in counterattack. But the Black Shadow's speed was astonishing; he easily evaded Lin Chen's strike and followed up with a rapid series of attacks that left Lin Chen scrambling to keep up.
After exchanging a few blows, Lin Chen felt a secret shock in his heart. The Black Shadow's strength far exceeded his imagination. Not only were his movements extremely fast, but his angles were tricky and hard to predict.
Composing himself, Lin Chen stopped blindly attacking and began observing the pattern of the Black Shadow's moves. He discovered that while the Black Shadow's assaults were fierce, there was a brief opening after every single strike. Seizing the opportunity during a momentary pause following one of the attacks, Lin Chen lashed out with a vicious kick toward his opponent's abdomen.
The Black Shadow seemed prepared; with a flash of his figure, he dodged the kick. However, Lin Chen's counter-strike made the Black Shadow realize that Lin Chen was no ordinary fighter, and his attacks instantly grew even more violent.
The Black Shadow waved his hands, and streams of black energy surged from his palms, transforming into sharp blades that hurtled toward Lin Chen. Lin Chen hurriedly employed his footwork to dodge while channeling his spiritual qi to form a defensive barrier in front of him.
"Bang, bang, bang!" The black blades smashed against the protective barrier, unleashing a series of explosive sounds.
Lin Chen felt immense pressure as his spiritual qi rapidly depleted. *I must find a way to break this deadlock,* Lin Chen thought to himself.
Right at that moment, a gust of wind suddenly swept across the arena, kicking up clouds of dust and partially obstructing both men's vision. This sudden environmental change introduced even more variables into the match.
He suddenly thought of a martial skill he had recently practiced: Wind-Breaking Fist. This technique demanded extreme explosive power and precise timing.
Lin Chen decided to take a calculated risk. He deliberately exposed an opening to lure the Black Shadow into attacking. Sure enough, the Black Shadow fell for it and lunged forward. Just as the Black Shadow was about to close in, Lin Chen let out a thunderous roar: "Wind-Breaking Fist!"
A formidable surge of power erupted from Lin Chen's fist, meeting the Black Shadow head-on. The Black Shadow had not expected Lin Chen to pull off such a move; he blocked in a rush, but was still driven back several steps by the force of Lin Chen's punch.
Pressing his advantage, Lin Chen launched a storm-like flurry of punches at the Black Shadow. The Black Shadow gradually fell onto the defensive, never expecting Lin Chen to find a window for a counter-attack in such a short span of time.
Yet, the Black Shadow was no pushover either. Trapped in adversity, he suddenly executed a bizarre movement technique and vanished from Lin Chen's sight in an instant. A jolt went through Lin Chen's heart as he vigilantly scanned his surroundings.
Right then, Lin Chen felt a chill graze his back. Too late to turn around, he could only rely on instinct to dodge to the side. The Black Shadow's attack brushed past Lin Chen's body, kicking up a rush of wind.
Lin Chen broke out in a cold sweat. If he had reacted even a fraction of a second slower, he would likely have been injured.
"What on earth is this guy's background?" Lin Chen's confusion deepened.
By now, the spectators were gripping their fists tightly, their hearts in their throats.
"Oh my, that was too close!"
"Hang in there, Lin Chen! You have to beat him!"
The match continued, with neither side daring to drop their guard for even a second. Lin Chen constantly adjusted his tactics, trying to pinpoint the Black Shadow's fatal weakness. Meanwhile, the Black Shadow kept shifting his offensive methods in an attempt to regain the upper hand.
The audience down below watched in utter astonishment; the sheer intensity of the match far exceeded their expectations.
"Lin Chen is truly formidable, lasting this long against such a powerful opponent."
"That Black Shadow is no simple character either; his movement technique is so bizarre that it's impossible to guard against."
The spectators chattered among themselves, cheering for the brilliant performance put on by both Lin Chen and the Black Shadow.
By this point, Lin Chen was dripping with sweat, yet his gaze remained steadfast. He knew this battle was not merely a contest of strength, but a test of sheer willpower.
The Black Shadow launched another assault. This time, he pressed his palms together and chanted under his breath. In an instant, the surrounding air seemed to freeze, and a crushing pressure bore down upon Lin Chen.
Lin Chen sensed an unprecedented crisis, but he refused to retreat. He mobilized all the spiritual qi in his body, gathering it between his hands as he prepared to meet the Black Shadow's strike head-on.
"Boom!" Their forces collided, producing a tremendous roar. The entire arena shook, and dust billowed into the air.
Just then, an accident occurred. A wave of sharp pain suddenly flared up in Lin Chen's leg—he had sustained an injury in an earlier bout, and the old wound had flared up.
Lin Chen and the Black Shadow each retreated dozens of paces before barely managing to steady themselves.
A wave of churning blood surged through Lin Chen's chest, leaving a sweet taste in his throat as he nearly vomited a mouthful of blood. He forced it down, refusing to show the slightest trace of weakness.
The Black Shadow was faring no better; his breathing had clearly grown ragged.
*I can't drag this out any longer,* Lin Chen thought, once again taking the initiative to launch an offensive.
He unleashed the boxing form he mastered best, his figure moving like a phantom and his punches striking like a gale. The Black Shadow met him with full force, and the two plunged into fierce combat once more.
Time ticked away second by second, and the match entered its white-hot climax. Both Lin Chen and the Black Shadow had reached their absolute limits, yet neither showed any intention of giving up.
Right at that moment, Lin Chen suddenly noticed a slight stagger in the Black Shadow's footing. A thought sparked in his mind: *Could this be a sign of the Black Shadow running out of stamina?*
Deciding to gamble, Lin Chen concentrated all his remaining strength into one final, decisive strike.
Seeing this, the Black Shadow attempted to block, but his strength had already failed him.
"Bang!" Lin Chen's fist slammed heavily into the Black Shadow's body, sending him flying backward to crash onto the ground.
"Lin Chen wins!" the referee announced loudly.
Lin Chen let out a long breath and collapsed flat onto the ground. This match had truly been arduous beyond measure.
Yet he knew that through this battle, his strength had ascended to a new level. On the martial arts path of the future, even more challenges awaited him...
