June 18th, Father's Day. As the summer solstice approached, cicadas chirped in intermittent waves, their calls growing increasingly frantic all morning. Then came a sudden downpour in the afternoon, heavy clouds blotting out the sun and quenching the droning chorus of the summer cicadas. Just past five o'clock in the afternoon, Lu Man turned off his computer and host machine. He was the only person left in the empty classroom. Staring at the screen to work for so long had left his eyes itching, and he rubbed them instinctively.
