Lu Mingfei let out a yawn as he stood by the roadside. It was supposed to be a wonderful weekend, yet here he was, heading to the police station early in the morning to make a statement—and it was all the fault of those two dog traffickers. Bored, he gazed at the painfully familiar streetscape around him, the neighborhood layout seemingly unchanged for years. The cookie-cutter apartment blocks and streets, the cluttered shops lining the road, and the roadside trees he had long since grown tired of looking at. If there was any change to speak of, it was the potholes in the road bearing witness to the city's development, the shopping mall that had been repeatedly expanded, changing both owners and appearance, the ever-shifting styles of pedestrians' clothing from year to year, and the new advertisements regularly swapped out on the billboards.
"I'm here." A brisk, pleasant voice reached Lu Mingfei's ears.
"Oh." Lu Mingfei turned his head in the direction of the voice, and once again, he was struck dumb.
