The scorching sun hung high in the sky, and the autumn wind still carried the lingering warmth of summer. On the athletic field of Shilan Middle School, the opening ceremony of the school sports meeting was finally drawing to a close. Vibrant and energetic students stood out in the burning sun, groaning inwardly. The school leaders, seated on the elevated rostrum, were completely shaded from the sun. From time to time, they picked up their water bottles for a sip, frowning with what seemed like dissatisfaction toward the students' lack of spirit below. This sports meeting had been scheduled unusually early specifically to celebrate the Olympic Games. As the top high school in the city, Shilan Middle School attracted a great deal of attention from municipal leaders, who even arranged for a television broadcast to showcase the spirited demeanor of the students. Yet the students weren't giving the leadership an ounce of face; their slouching, disorderly postures left the principal feeling rather embarrassed and stripped of his dignity. Aside from the school leaders, there was an old foreigner on the platform who called himself Professor Guderian. He came from Kassel College in the United States on an academic exchange to China, and by sheer coincidence, he happened to catch Shilan Middle School's sports meeting and decided to check out the alma mater of his brilliant student, Chu Zihang.
