Hector used going home to check on Aberforth as an excuse to brush off Harry and the others' inquiries. This kind of excuse was always handy and entirely foolproof; Harry and Ron also knew that Hector's home was the Hog's Head in Hogsmeade, so heading back for a visit after exams was completely reasonable.
Not returning to the dormitory? For other young wizards, that certainly would have been a serious issue, but this was Hector Dumbledore. Even if Hector chose to become a day student next semester, Harry felt it wouldn't be much of a problem at all.
However, things became much simpler now. At least Harry didn't have to worry about how so many people were going to squeeze underneath the Invisibility Cloak.
