Hearing her question, the smile on Cheng Xin’s face grew significantly, and he pointed directly at the document bag.
"We have been keeping a close eye on Li Wei, hoping to start with the people around him."
"But his true protection is the Li Group!"
"As long as we take down that umbrella, how many days could Li Wei possibly keep jumping around?"
Hearing this, Su Mu’s eyes lit up.
"That’s right! As long as we submit this evidence when the court is in session, the Li Group will be finished!"
"By then, the Li family will be too busy looking after themselves to have any energy left to protect Li Wei."
The two exchanged a smile, both seeing the dawn of victory in the other’s eyes.
However, the excitement on Cheng Xin’s face quickly faded, replaced by calm, focused thought. He reorganized the files in the document bag, his tone turning serious once more.
"Although this evidence is a lethal blow to the Li Group, it is not enough for Li Wei’s case."
Hearing this, Su Mu calmed down and nodded. "You’re right. We still need more direct evidence—something that can prove Li Wei was directly involved in the illegal activities surrounding Zhang Qiang’s wife’s case."
Upon hearing Su Mu, Cheng Xin rubbed his temples wearily and sighed. "Yes, the situation is like a puzzle. We have plenty of pieces, but the key ones are nowhere to be found."
Cheng Xin gestured to the materials on the table, his tone filled with fatigue. "Without witnesses or physical evidence, this case will be very hard to win."
Su Mu walked behind him and gently massaged his shoulders, saying softly, "Don’t worry. We still have time. We will definitely find a breakthrough."
This was a habit they had formed back in their school days. Whenever they worked on a group project, if one person put in too much effort, the other would instinctively step up to offer a relaxing massage.
Cheng Xin closed his eyes, feeling the pressure of Su Mu’s fingertips, though his thoughts drifted back to the crime scene. Li Wei’s arrogant, domineering demeanor and Zhang Qiang’s near-broken state stung his nerves like needles.
"There isn't much time left, Mumu." Cheng Xin opened his eyes, his tone firm. "I estimate the court will reconvene in a week at the latest. The Li family won't give us much time to investigate, so we must speed up our progress."
Hearing this, Su Mu stopped her hands, asking with deep concern, "Then what do you plan to do?"
After a deep breath, a sharp glint flashed in Cheng Xin’s eyes as he spoke slowly. "Since we can't find clues from the people, we start with the physical evidence! We’ll go to the scene of the incident; maybe we’ll find some traces."
"The scene of the incident? But the police have already investigated that place long ago. Could there really be any clues left? Besides, I feel that since they managed to dismiss it as a suicide last time, the Li family definitely cleaned up all the evidence. Wouldn’t it just be a waste of time to go there now?"
Looking at Cheng Xin, Su Mu was truly confused. Going to the crime scene at this stage really seemed like a waste of time.
"No, it won’t be." Cheng Xin said, a cold smile gradually appearing on his face. "After observing them for a few days, haven’t you noticed yet? That guy Li Wei looks smart, but he’s actually as stupid as a pig. Even his father, Li Quan, isn’t exactly a cautious person. So, I’m betting that even if he dealt with the evidence, he certainly didn't do a clean job of it. There might be some flaws left behind."
With that, Cheng Xin grabbed his coat and said to Su Mu, "Let’s go. Bring your camera. We’re going to try our luck."
Although Su Mu still had her doubts, she chose to trust him. She picked up her camera and followed him out the door.
They drove in silence and soon arrived at the high-rise building where Zhang Qiang’s wife had fallen. Looking up at the skyscraper, Cheng Xin couldn't help but frown. This place was crowded; finding clues here was undoubtedly like looking for a needle in a haystack.
"Cheng Xin, where do we start looking?" Su Mu scanned her surroundings, feeling somewhat lost.
Cheng Xin didn't answer immediately. He walked to the edge of the building and looked up, his gaze finally resting on a corner of the top floor. Squinting, his eyes seemed to pierce through layers of concrete, reaching for the secrets hidden in the high altitude. He could almost see the woman’s desperate figure, struggling in the air, trying to grab onto a last straw of hope.
The ground beneath the fall site was unnaturally clean. Even if there were a cleaning crew, the level of cleanliness was exaggerated. This confirmed his suspicion: someone had deliberately cleared the scene.
"Let’s go, Mumu. We’re going up to take a look." Cheng Xin withdrew his gaze, his tone cold.
Upon entering the building, a security guard stopped them as a matter of routine. "Excuse me, what are you two here for? This is private property. If you don’t have an appointment, please leave."
The guard looked them up and down with vigilance. Because of the recent falling incident, righteous people came here to cause trouble almost every day. The security staff were genuinely scared.
"Hello, I am a lawyer here to investigate some matters." Cheng Xin displayed his credentials, his tone flat but brooks no argument.
Su Mu followed suit, showing her press badge. "I’m here to report on this. I’m sure you’re aware of how big this case has become. I need to understand the situation."
The guard hesitated but finally let them through. After all, lawyers and reporters were not to be trifled with, and he was just an employee—it was better to avoid unnecessary trouble.
The wind on the top floor was strong, whistling past their ears as if telling some unknown secret. Cheng Xin walked to the corner and carefully observed the ground. Some scattered cigarette butts and wine stains caught his attention.
"It looks like this is the primary crime scene." Cheng Xin squatted down, put on gloves, and picked up a cigarette butt with his fingers, carefully identifying the markings. "I recall this brand of cigarette costs about five hundred? Expensive stuff—it fits Li Wei’s taste."
Su Mu recorded every detail of the scene with her camera. The flash went off repeatedly, illuminating the dark corner as if it were broad daylight.
Cheng Xin noticed some subtle scratches on the drainpipe of the outer wall. Following the scratches upward, he saw similar marks on the edge of the top-floor window. These marks were fresh, appearing as if they had only just been made.
"Mumu, get a shot of these scratches," Cheng Xin said, pointing at the window edge. "I think we’re about to find our breakthrough."
Su Mu nodded, aiming her lens at the scratches and shooting carefully.
