The Village Chief's son was named Li Dongqiang. Strictly speaking, he was distantly related to the Hou family, and Hou Yong was technically his cousin.
The two of them hadn't always been at odds. Having grown up together, their families were equally poor, neither better off than the other. Back then, they used to go down to the river together to catch fish and shrimp, and their relationship had been reasonably harmonious.
