Some strong, able-bodied men clutched cardboard boxes full of goods so tightly that the veins on their arms bulged slightly from the exertion. Others, elderly men well past fifty, struggled to pull heavy pushcarts, every step an effort as large beads of sweat rolled down their foreheads and soaked their clothes.
Shops lined both sides of the passageway, their signs varying in style.
