Qiao Qingqing went out to fetch water and then returned to wash Lu Heng’s face and hands. Even after an entire basin of water turned murky, Lu Heng remained covered in grime. Qiao Qingqing felt no resentment. She knew Lu Heng must have suffered immensely to make his way home; without those layers of mud, he might not have survived the journey at all. It took four full basins of water to get him somewhat clean. His hair, however, was beyond saving; she could only let him continue to soil the hospital pillow. Once she finished cleaning him, Qiao Qingqing began peeling eggs, feeding him bits of egg and water. Lu Heng was truly famished, eating with great relish. Watching him wolf them down, one egg after another, Qiao Qingqing couldn't help but say tenderly, "Eat slowly. Don't choke."
