Rustling sounds came from the corner of the wall. Pei You sat on the floor with her knees hugged to her chest. The tip of her nose was filled with the long-standing stench of rot from the cell and the pungent smell of her own blood, which made her feel nauseous time and again. Locking eyes with a mouse crawling out of a mouse hole in the corner, Pei You watched calmly as the exceptionally plump rodent scampered before her eyes. A place like a prison left no leftover food for these mice to eat, but fresh corpses were produced here every day. Mice nourished by fresh blood and flesh were naturally fatter than those on the outside.
