That young gentleman assumed Miss Pei was merely being modest. After all, this was a golden opportunity to make a favorable impression before the Chancellor; even if a young lady of a noble house had no intention of entering the civil service, being hailed as a "talented woman" carried significant benefits.
Miss Pei, however, was resolute in her refusal. Wouldn’t it be far more pleasant to huddle in the back row with her friends, reading scripts and chatting away? She wasn't about to lose her mind and sit in the front row, trembling with anxiety.
As Miss Pei once again rejected a prime seat in the front, the students in the lecture hall whispered amongst themselves.
