Lingxiao circled the flower house but could not hear Mingzhu’s voice in any of the rooms. Frowning, she left the house and waited outside the courtyard.
Not long after, she caught sight of Mingzhu. After walking out of the courtyard gate, Mingzhu turned back to cast a long, deep look at the yard. She appeared weary, and from her vantage point, Lingxiao also peered into the yard, where someone seemed to be standing in the darkness, watching Mingzhu in return. Lingxiao could not see clearly.
Mingzhu departed. Lingxiao hesitated for a moment before flying back toward the flower house. She landed where the person had been standing, but could only catch a faint trace of floral scent. Her sense of smell was not particularly sharp; she could distinguish a vague sweetness, but could not pinpoint the direction it came from. Frustrated, she realized she would not find the person tonight. There must be a secret passage beneath the flower house, yet she had no idea where the entrance lay. Still, she consoled herself, she had already gained something tonight. It was best to head back; she could not let Mingzhu know she was being followed.
